Valerie's journey began in Sioux Falls, where she was raised with warmth and care. She graduated from Marion High School in 1976, demonstrating early on her commitment to learning and growth. Continuing her education, Valerie earned a Bachelor of Nursing degree from South Dakota State University in 1980, launching a career that would touch countless lives and leave an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
Her professional journey began in nursing, where she worked tirelessly until 1993. Valerie's nurturing spirit and innate ability to comfort those in need defined her years in healthcare. In 1993, she embarked on a new venture, starting a Mary Kay business, where her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly. She built not just a successful business, but also a community of empowered individuals who were inspired by her passion and determination.
In 2010, Valerie returned to her roots in healthcare, transitioning to roles that allowed her to work closely with families, offering support and understanding during their most challenging times. Her empathetic nature and unwavering support became a source of solace for many.
Valerie's life was deeply enriched by her family. She is survived by her cherished sons, Neil Backhaus and his wife Shelby, and Nathan Backhaus, who were the pride and joy of her life. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren, Pasley and Paxton, who brought immense joy and light into her life.
