Ulrich E. Drewitz

September 17, 1935 — May 26, 2026

Ulrich E. Drewitz, a devoted husband, cherished father, and beloved grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on September 17, 1935, in Schneidemühl, Germany, Ulrich's life was a remarkable journey marked by resilience, love, and dedication. Ulrich was the son of Waldfried Drewitz and Anna Ziebarth, who nurtured him into the kind-hearted and industrious man we all had the privilege to know. He emigrated from Germany at the tender age of 21, bringing with him a courageous spirit that would define his future. Shortly after his arrival, Ulrich was drafted into the army, where he served with distinction, building a foundation of service and dedication that carried through to every endeavor in his life. On July 3, 1962, Ulrich married the love of his life, Vilma. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a life centered on family in a home filled with laughter and warmth. Ulrich's devotion was profound; he cared for Vilma with unwavering love until her last days, embodying the vows they shared. Ulrich's career was marked by perseverance and a strong work ethic. He held various jobs to support his family, ultimately finding his place at Mechanical Equipment Company (MECO), where he dedicated over 40 years of his life. His colleagues remember him as a diligent and reliable worker, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a word of advice. Outside of work, Ulrich had a deep love for New Orleans, especially its rich and vibrant seafood culture. Whether it was fish, shrimp, crabs, or crawfish, he delighted in sharing a meal with loved ones, his eyes lighting up with every bite. His mechanical inclination was another source of pride; nothing brought him greater joy than maintaining the family home, which stood as a testament to his skill and care. Ulrich's happiest moments were spent surrounded by family. He adored his children, Rachel Piercey and Troy U. Drewitz, and Troy's wife, Helga Zummar-Drewitz. His siblings, Anne-Marie Schiff and Gertrude Bormann, were lifelong companions and cherished friends. A proud and doting grandfather, Ulrich's legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Sean Paisant, Alexander Troy Drewitz, Frederick Troy Drewitz, and Erika Marie Drewitz, each of whom carries a piece of his heart. He was predeceased by his dear wife, Vilma, his brother, Joachim Drewitz, and sister, Hanne-Lore Jarfe. Their memories were always a source of comfort and inspiration to him. Ulrich's life was a tapestry of love, strength, and family. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit remains in the laughter of family gatherings, the taste of a well-prepared seafood dish, and the enduring legacy he leaves behind. As we celebrate his life, we hold onto the lessons he imparted: to love fiercely, serve with honor, and cherish the moments that make life so beautifully worthwhile. A private family service will be held to honor Ulrich's memory, as he wished to be remembered surrounded by those he loved most. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to a charity of choice, celebrating Ulrich's generous spirit and lifelong commitment to giving back. Rest in peace, Ulrich. Your journey touched us all, and the world is a better place for having had you in it.
