April 8, 1948 — October 25, 2026

It is with profound sadness that the family of Tony McRae Leonard announces his passing on October 25, 2026, at the age of 78, after a long and courageous battle with heart problems. Born on April 8, 1948, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Tony was the beloved son of Clarence Willis and Ivylyn Mitchell Leonard, who predeceased him. Tony graduated from Griffon High School in 1966 and went on to earn dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Textile Chemistry and Textile Technology from North Carolina State University. His passion and expertise in the textile industry spanned over four decades, during which he worked with Color Zen out of New York and eventually founded his own company, MFI. Tony's innovative spirit led him to develop and patent a groundbreaking process for dyeing cotton, marking a significant contribution to the field. On June 29, 1969, Tony married his college sweetheart , Paula Ward, with whom he shared 57 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures. Tony is survived by his devoted wife Paula, his son William Brooks Leonard and wife Katie Bagwell, and his sister Debra Leonard Ryan and husband Dennis. He also leaves behind his cherished nephews, Matthew, Gregory, and Nicholas Ryan. An active member of Williamson Chapel United Methodist Church, Tony was deeply committed to his faith and community. He served on various church boards, sang in the Chancellor Choir and taught Adult Sunday School. His dedication to service extended beyond the church, as he was an Eagle Scout and served as Scout Master for Troop 191 in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Tony's love for the outdoors was evident through his passion for fishing, and he cherished the many travels he embarked on with Paula. Known for his quick wit and friendly demeanor, Tony had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcome and special. His joyous spirit and generous heart touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. A service to celebrate Tony's life will be held on October 31, 2026, at 2:00 PM, with visitation at 1:00 pm, at Williamson Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 575 Brawley School Road, Mooresville, NC 28117. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Williamson Chapel United Methodist Church in memory of Tony.
