Tom Nelson

January 22, 1938 — April 4, 2026

With deep love and cherished memories, we announce the peaceful passing of Tom Nelson, who left this world on April 4, 2026, surrounded by his adoring family. Born on January 22, 1938, in the quaint town of Winthrop, Minnesota, Tom lived a life filled with joy, kindness, and unwavering generosity. Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Patti, who was his steadfast companion and partner through life's many adventures. His brother, Jack, children Jeff and Amy, as well as his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, continue his legacy of love. Tom's family, including his great-grandchildren, will carry forward the values of compassion and integrity that he instilled in them. Tom's professional journey was one of dedication and innovation. After a distinguished career at 3M, where he contributed significantly to the packaging division, Tom retired with pride. He was especially recognized for his work during the rise of microwave popcorn in the 80s and 90s and the turkey timers of the 2000s. His ingenuity was further marked by holding a patent for packaging design using 3M adhesives. Beyond his career, Tom devoted himself to his community and passions. As a volunteer firefighter in Woodbury's early days, he served with courage and commitment. His love for history and education found a home at the Minnesota Science Museum, where he shared his knowledge of the museum's Egyptian mummy with visitors. In his retirement, Tom became a Master Gardener, finding joy and fulfillment in nurturing both plants and relationships. A longstanding member of the Woodbury Lutheran Church, Tom's faith was evident in his actions and service. He held roles as an elder, choir member, and teacher of confirmation classes. Tom's generosity extended to the youth group, where he led expeditions to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, a place dear to his heart. His warm voice was a fixture during Sunday services, where he often read scripture. Tom was an avid outdoorsman, finding solace and excitement in nature. His annual trips to the BWCA with lifelong friends were filled with laughter, storytelling, and a shared passion for fishing. Locally, he frequented rivers and lakes with his fishing buddies, creating lasting memories with his grandchildren aboard his trusty boat. Known for his easy smile and welcoming nature, Tom, alongside Patti, hosted countless gatherings at their Lamplight Circle home. Their famous fish fries, pig roasts, and fondue parties were beloved events that strengthened bonds between family, friends, and neighbors. Tom's hospitality and warmth will forever be remembered by all who were fortunate to share in these joyous occasions. A celebration of Tom's remarkable life will be held on April 22, 2026, at Woodbury Lutheran Church, located at 7380 Afton Road, Woodbury, MN 55125. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate care team at Comforts of Home Assisted Living facility in Hudson, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Tom's memory to Save the Boundary Waters, a cause close to his heart, at https://www.savetheboundarywaters.org/. Tom Nelson's legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew him.
