Thurgood Thompson

May 5, 1939 — June 27, 2026

Thurgood Thompson, a beloved friend, uncle, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 27, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on May 5, 1939, in the quaint town of Ayden, North Carolina, Thurgood was the cherished son of the late Therman and Georgia Thompson. He was predeceased by his dear siblings, brother Eugene and sister Ethel, with whom he shared a profound bond throughout his life. Thurgood's journey through life was marked by integrity, service, and a heart full of kindness. After graduating from Adkin High School in 1947, he dedicated a decade to serving his country in the United States Army, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. It was in the military that Thurgood honed his leadership skills and developed a deep sense of camaraderie that he carried with him throughout his life. Following his honorable discharge, Thurgood transitioned to a civilian career, driving city buses for Greenville for a decade. His love for the open road and the people he met along the way led him to Tidewater Transit, where he dedicated 20 more years of service before retiring. Thurgood was not only known for his professionalism but also for his unwavering kindness, always ready to offer his seat to someone else or share a warm smile that could light up any room. Outside of work, Thurgood was a man of many passions. He was an avid hunter, finding peace and joy in the quietude of nature. He also tended lovingly to his fruit trees, a testament to his nurturing spirit and patience. His home was always a place of warmth and welcome, where friends and family gathered to share stories and laughter. Thurgood's life was richly intertwined with those he loved. He leaves behind his treasured niece Tonia Thompson, Tracy Batts, nephew Tommy Thompson, and their children, whom he adored as his own. His sister-in-law Delia Thompson, along with his close friends Vincent Hughes and Joe Potter, will miss his steadfast friendship and the joy he brought into their lives. A service to honor and celebrate the life of Thurgood Thompson will be held on July 3, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the First Baptist Church, located at 418 E Bute St, Norfolk, 23510. Friends and family are invited to gather and remember a man who touched so many lives with his generosity and love. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Thurgood's memory to a charity of your choice. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed by many.
