It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Thomas Wesley Croff, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on April 27, 2026, at the age of 82. Surrounded by the love of his family, Tom took his final breaths at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, courage, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Born at home on April 5, 1944, in Leavering, Michigan, Tom was the cherished son of Maynard and Opal Croff. His early years were spent surrounded by the love and camaraderie of his siblings, Beverly Shull (Croff), Berry Croff, and his younger twin brothers, Robert and Richard Hanes, all of whom predeceased him. The bonds of family were a cornerstone of Tom’s life, a commitment he carried into his own family with unwavering devotion.
In 1972, Tom married the love of his life, Esther Flukes, forging a partnership that spanned 54 beautiful years. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories. Tom was the proud father of two children, Lisa Gabel, who is engaged to Brian Dailey, and Chad Croff, married to Amy. His love and pride extended to his grandchildren—Dillon, Alivia, Aiden, and Cooper Croff—with the joy of anticipating another grandchild on the way.
A proud graduate of Eastern High School in 1962, Tom furthered his education at Lansing Community College. His life took a courageous turn when he was drafted and served his country in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. For his bravery and service, he was awarded two Purple Hearts.
Tom’s professional journey was marked by a commitment to hard work and community. He served as a general manager at various restaurants in Saginaw and Lansing and later became a party store owner. His dedication extended beyond his career as he served on the Capital Region Airport Authority Board and the Vanderbilt Community Church Board. In 2019, he spearheaded local efforts to restore the Vanderbilt Area War Veterans Memorial Park, raising $600 to honor fellow veterans.
A man of diverse interests, Tom found joy in model trains, woodworking, genealogy, and lawn care. His enthusiasm for new technology led him to flying drones and capturing breathtaking aerial videos. An avid traveler, he and Esther explored the continental United States in their RV, creating lifelong memories and friendships. Whether spending winters at Ramblers Rest, an active park member, or enjoying annual camping trips in Mackinaw City, Tom cherished the moments spent with family and friends.
Tom’s love for his family was unparalleled. He was a strong protector, a patient teacher, and a man who could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. His infectious spirit and love for animals endeared him to many, making him a beloved figure in all circles.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on May 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Vanderbilt Community Church. As we gather to honor his remarkable journey, we remember a man whose life was a testament to love, resilience, and the enduring bonds of family.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Vanderbilt Area War Veterans Memorial Park, ensuring Tom’s legacy of service and dedication continues to inspire future generations.
Tom’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love he so generously shared in life.
