It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Thomas "Shane" Wayne Young, who left this world on June 5,2026, at the age of 68. Born on January 2, 1958, in the warm and welcoming embrace of Gulfport, Mississippi, Shane was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Throughout his life, Shane endeared himself to all who knew him with his generous spirit, infectious sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends.
Shane was the cherished son of Ella Ruth Young and Robert Young, and his childhood was enriched by the loving presence of his stepfather, Gene Buckner. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Carol Lynne Conger, his brother Robert Calvin Young Jr., and his grandfather Harry Jones. Shane carried their memories in his heart, honoring them through his life's journey.
Shane's journey led him to cross paths with the love of his life, Rita Catherine Bess. They married on March 31, 1989, embarking on a beautiful 37-year marriage, and a 40-year companionship filled with laughter, love, and lasting memories. Together, they built a family that was his pride and joy, extending his warmth and wisdom to his stepchildren: James Bess (JacQuetta Bess), Sherry Jordan (Anthony Jordan), and Crystal Ball (Michael Ball). Shane's legacy continues through his 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to his life.
Shane's family extended beyond his immediate kin, including his devoted brother William A. Young, and his nieces Ariel, Lacretia, Amber, Erica, and Torrey. His sisters-in-law, Sarah Hagan and Beverly Binion, and brother-in-law, Anthony White, were also a cherished part of his life.
Education was a cornerstone of Shane's early years, attending public schools and George Washington High School, where he formed lasting friendships and cultivated a love for learning. Shane proudly served his country in the National Guard for two years, demonstrating his commitment to duty and service.
Professionally, Shane made his mark as a machine operator at the Indianapolis Star and News, and he was also a talented painter. His work ethic and dedication were evident until his retirement in 2020, marking the culmination of a career defined by skill and integrity.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Shane was a man of many passions. He had an undeniable love for music, singing, and dancing, always the life of the party and the first to hit the dance floor. A master at the grill, his cooking—especially his famous chili—was a centerpiece at family gatherings. Shane lived life with exuberance, finding joy in the simple pleasures and sharing that joy with those around him.
Above all, Shane's greatest gift was his heart—full of love, kindness, and generosity. He was a man who understood the value of laughter and the healing power of a good joke, leaving a legacy of joy and warmth. Shane was not just a name but a presence that filled every room with light and laughter.
The family invites all who knew and loved Shane to join them in celebrating his life, a life that touched many and left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though Shane has left this earthly realm, his spirit will forever dance in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice, in honor of Shane's generous spirit. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date, where stories, laughter, and love will be shared in memory of a truly remarkable man.
