With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Thomas P. Hofler, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, who passed peacefully on May 9, 2026, at the age of 81. Born in Newark, NJ, on November 20, 1944, Thomas was the cherished son of William Mills Hofler and Sarah Solomon Hofler.
Thomas was educated in the Newark Public Schools, and he proudly graduated from Central High School. His early years were marked by a deep sense of duty and service, which led him to serve his country with honor as a member of the U.S. Army. Stationed in Germany from 1963 to 1966, he was recognized as a decorated rifle marksman and awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He continued his service in the reserves until 1969, embodying the values of commitment and dedication that would define his life.
After his military service, Thomas embarked on a career with the United States Post Office, where he worked diligently for an impressive 51 years until his retirement in 2013. His work was not just a job but a testament to his unwavering work ethic and reliability.
Thomas was more than his career and service; he was a founding member of "Inner City Step," a community organization that brought him immense pride and joy. Within this group, he discovered a personal relationship with God and a platform to share his wisdom and life experiences, touching many lives with his guidance and support.
An avid sports fan, Thomas found joy in the games of basketball and baseball. His love for sports mirrored his approach to life—both passionate and strategic. Though he may have appeared reserved and introverted to some, those who knew him well recognized his introspective and generous spirit. He was always ready with a witty acronym or phrase, bringing smiles and laughter to those around him.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, William and Sarah, his brother William, his sisters Marlene and Dorothy, and his niece Kristyl. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his sister Laverne Hofler-Grey; nieces Erika Hofler-Mattaur, Shaaron Thompson, and Veronica Hofler; nephew Erik Preston Hofler; two great nieces, one great nephew, and two great-great nieces. His extended family and a host of friends will forever remember him for his warmth, humor, and unyielding love.
Thomas's journey on this earth was a testament to a life well-lived, filled with purpose, love, and service to others. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, we carry forward his legacy in our hearts, forever grateful for the moments and memories he shared with us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to "Inner City Step," ensuring that Thomas's spirit of guidance and community continues to thrive. A celebration of Thomas's life will be held at a later date to honor the remarkable man he was and the indelible mark he left on this world.
