Thomas Lloyd Harwell

December 21, 1941 — July 2, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas Lloyd Harwell, who departed this world peacefully on July 2, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with kidney disease. Born on December 21, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Thomas was the son of Marion and Laura Harwell, who predeceased him, as did his brother, Robert M. Harwell, and sister, Marianne P. Gibson. He is survived by his ex-wife, Shirley H. Harwell and his children, Gary L. Harwell (Cassie) and Susan D. McQueary (Doran), who were his pride and joy. His granddaughters, Emily R. McQueary and Molly K. McQueary, brought happiness to his life. His legacy also lives on through his nephews, Scott Harwell and Douglas Harwell, and his niece, Kendall H. Blanchard. Thomas's journey in life was marked by a deep commitment to education and service. A proud graduate of Byrd High School in 1958, he furthered his academic pursuits at Northwestern State University, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting. During his time at the university, Thomas became a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, forging friendships that would last a lifetime. In service to his country, Thomas joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 1967, where he rose to the rank of sergeant and served with honor until 1973. His dedication and commitment earned him an Honorable Discharge, reflecting his unwavering devotion to the nation he loved. Thomas's professional journey was as diverse as it was accomplished. He began his career at Western Electric in the inventory and actuaries office, later transitioning to a career as a custom home builder in the Shreveport area. With the ever-evolving landscape of technology, Thomas redirected his talents towards computers, data management, and computer-based operating systems. He further honed his skills at Woods Operating Company in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he excelled as a JIB accountant and billing professional. A man of many talents, Thomas had a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. His garden was a testament to his love for nature, and his woodworking skills were nothing short of artistry. Thomas crafted exquisite cabinets, furniture, and grandfather clocks that will continue to tick in the homes of those he loved. He was also a gifted mechanic, often found with his hands deep in the engines of cars and trucks, ensuring they ran smoothly. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation, a cause close to Thomas's heart, reflecting his spirit of generosity and service.
