July 27, 1955 — July 5, 2026

Thomas Leroy "Petie" Hebb, Jr., aged 70, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Born on July 27, 1955, in Washington, D.C., Petie was the beloved firstborn of the late Thomas Leroy Hebb, Sr. and Margaret Briscoe Hebb. As the eldest of five children, Petie was a cherished brother, a devoted father, a proud grandfather, and a treasured friend to many. Petie's life was marked by significant achievements, both personal and professional. In 1970, he became the first Black graduate of the Seafarers Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship, setting a precedent and opening doors for future generations of African American mariners. His pioneering spirit and determination were evident throughout his career and life. Though his professional journey is described simply as "JOBS," those who knew Petie understood that his true calling was his passion for autobody work. Renowned for his exceptional talent in restoring and repairing vehicles, Petie's craftsmanship was admired by all who had the privilege of witnessing it. His ability to breathe new life into automobiles was nothing short of remarkable. Racing was another of Petie's great passions. He spent countless weekends at Budd's Creek Raceway with his brother Brian, family, and friends, reveling in the excitement and camaraderie that the races brought. These moments, along with his visits to family in St. Mary's County, MD, were among his happiest. He delighted in sharing stories about the racetrack and his autobody exploits, creating cherished memories for all who listened. Petie's warmth, generosity, and love for his family and friends were defining traits of his character. He is survived by his devoted son, Thomas "Putt" Hebb and his daughter-in-law, Edwina; his cherished grandchildren, Thomas Hebb; his loving siblings, sister Deborah and brother Charles "Brian" Hebb, Sr., along with Brian's wife Wanda; his nephew Charles "BJ" Hebb, Jr.; and nieces Markeeta, Tania, Tiffany, and Breanna. He also leaves behind great-nieces and nephews Ravyn, Stephen, Lauryn, Kira, Charlie, Kyle, Jr., and Lori Lynne, as well as a vast network of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will forever hold him dear. In addition to his parents, Petie was preceded in death by his brother Kevin Hebb and his son Elliott Hebb, whose memories he cherished deeply. A service to honor Petie's life will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Briscoe Tonic Funeral Home, located at 7 Industrial Park, Waldorf, MD 20602. Family and friends are invited to gather, pay their respects, and celebrate the life of a man whose spirit, kindness, and legacy will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Petie's memory to a charity of your choice.
