Thomas Bailey
September 23, 1949 — September 16, 2026
Thomas Bailey, a cherished father, grandfather, and firefighter, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on September 23, 1949, in Staten Island, New York, Thomas lived a life filled with dedication, love, and service.
He was the beloved son of David and Mary Bailey, who instilled in him the values that would guide his life's work. Thomas was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Margaret "Peggy" Bailey, his son Sean Bailey, and his siblings, Maryann Zerega and David Bailey. He is survived by his devoted son, Thomas Bailey, daughter-in-law Victoria Bailey, and his treasured grandchildren, Sean and Christopher, who were the light of his life.
Thomas's journey began with his education at St. Peter's High School in Staten Island, graduating in 1967. He pursued higher education at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ, earning a bachelor's degree in education in 1971. Thomas worked as a teacher at St. Christopher's School until he joined the New York City Fire Department in 1977. He was a firefighter in Engine 9/Ladder 6 in Chinatown and then in Ladder 81, South Beach. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1991, where he was assigned to Engine 220, Park Slope and finished his career Engine 159 Dongan Hills. Thomas retired in May of 2001 but was reinstated to duty after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. He finally retired in 2003.
Beyond his professional achievements, Thomas was an avid sports enthusiast. He found joy in playing and watching sports, supporting teams like the NY Giants, NY Mets, and NY Knicks. Known for his athletic prowess, he enjoyed dribbling a basketball at PS8, hitting tennis balls at Walker Park, playing on softball teams, and even represented the FDNY in the Battle of the Badges at the US Open in 2003. Later in life, he developed a passion for golf, achieving an impressive four holes-in-one. And on days when the weather did not permit sports, Thomas could often be found enjoying horse races at OTB.
Thomas was affectionately known as "The International Man of Leisure," always ready with a story to entertain those around him. He cherished moments spent playing golf with his son and grandson Sean, and enjoyed chess and card games with his grandson Christopher. His warmth, humor, and love for life left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
