It is with heavy hearts yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Thomas Gatins on May 22, 2026, at the age of 82. Surrounded by the warmth and love of his family, Thomas took his final breath at home, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and unyielding strength.
Born on April 12, 1944, in Washington DC, Thomas was a beacon of light and love from the very beginning. He was the cherished son of the late George and Kathryn Gatins, and he deeply admired his parents for their unwavering support and guidance. Thomas was also predeceased by his beloved sisters, Ann, Eileen, and Pat, whose memories he held close to his heart.
Thomas's early years were spent in Lagrange, Illinois, where he graduated from Lyons Township, laying the foundation for a life of learning and achievement. His career was marked by diligence and expertise, beginning as a supervisor at FE Moran. He then excelled as a mechanical estimator at Skidmore Owings Merrill, Corboy, and eventually became a mechanical electrical superintendent at WE O’Neil. His colleagues remember him as a dedicated professional who approached every challenge with a can-do attitude and a smile.
Beyond his professional life, Thomas was a true renaissance man, possessing a multitude of talents and interests. He was a master craftsman, finding joy in building houses, a passion that brought beauty and stability to many lives. His love for Corvettes was equally notable, reflecting his appreciation for both elegance and performance. Known affectionately as a jack of all trades, Thomas approached every project with creativity and enthusiasm.
Thomas's personal life was filled with love and devotion. In 1964, he married Anita, and together they welcomed two wonderful sons, Thomas and Steven. Though their paths diverged, the love they shared was enduring. Later in life, Thomas found companionship and happiness with Dee, whom he married in 1986. His family was blessed with another son, Matthew, from his partnership with Pam. Thomas's life was enriched by his six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
Thomas will be dearly missed by his family, including his devoted wife, Dee, his beloved children, Thomas, Steven, and Matthew, and his treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
A service to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Thomas Gatins will be held on May 29, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the DuPage County Crematorium, located at 951 Washington St., West Chicago, Illinois. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a truly extraordinary man whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Thomas's memory to a charity of your choice, celebrating his generosity and commitment to helping others.
