Thomas F Smith
September 29, 1940 — October 31, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Thomas F. Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who departed this life surrounded by family love on October 31, 2026. Born on September 29, 1940, in the vibrant heart of Brooklyn, NY, Thomas was a man whose life was a testament to dedication, service, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear.
Thomas was the cherished son of Irene (McConnell) Smith and William Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings William, Edward, Barbara, Irene, Richard, Ellen, and his son, Christopher Thompson. His legacy of love and kindness lives on through his devoted wife, Carol, his sons Michael Thompson and his wife Hazel, and Thomas Smith Jr. Thomas leaves behind a close-knit family, including his grandchildren Taylor (Joseph), Thomas (Lexi), Shannon, and Madison, and a great-grandson, Carter. He is also survived by his siblings Virginia Gomez, Alice Perez, James, and Loretta D'Auria, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his memory.
Thomas was a proud alumnus of Chelsea Vocational High School, graduating in 1957. He answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he served with honor from 1957 to 1960. Following his military service, he pursued a long and fulfilling career as a delivery driver with the New York newspapers, dedicatedly working for over 40 years. In 2003, he retired from the New York Times, having been a valued member of the Newspaper and Mail Deliverers' Union (NMDU), where he also served as Vice President of the NMDU Pensioners Association, advocating for his fellow retirees.
Thomas was a man of simple pleasures, finding joy in the laughter and gatherings of family, as well as the quiet solitude of his garden. He eagerly anticipated watching his grandson play baseball, a testament to the pride he took in his family's achievements. His summers were spent tending to his garden and finding rest in his hammock, a serene retreat where he reflected on the blessings of his life.
A service to honor and celebrate Thomas's life will be held on November 4, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, reflecting Thomas's generous spirit and his lifelong commitment to helping others.
Though Thomas has left this world, his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him. His legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness will continue to inspire all who were touched by his extraordinary life.
