It is with heavy hearts and fond remembrance that we announce the passing of Thomas Bruce McDonald, who departed this life with dignity and peace on February 28, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on July 9, 1933, in the warm embrace of Helena, Arkansas, Thomas lived a life marked by service, love, and a dedication to his family and community.
Thomas was the cherished son of Jack McDonald and Harriett Bruce, who instilled in him the values of hard work and integrity. These principles guided him throughout his life, from his early years in West Helena, where he graduated from Central High School in 1951, to his distinguished academic journey at Arkansas State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1955.
His commitment to service extended beyond the classroom and into the battlefields, as Thomas proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his honorable military service, he returned home and took on the role of mentor and educator, becoming a beloved coach and earning the distinguished title of "Coach of the Year" in 1965. His passion for education led him to achieve certification as a School Administrator and Supervisor, impacting countless lives with his wisdom and unwavering support.
On September 10, 1958, Thomas united in marriage with the love of his life, Kathleen McDonald, in a heartfelt ceremony in Tunica, Mississippi. Their partnership, spanning decades, was a testament to enduring love and companionship. Kathleen preceded him in death, and their reunion now brings solace to those who mourn his passing.
Thomas leaves behind a legacy of love, survived by his devoted son, Thomas McDonald, II, and his wife Sandy. His spirit lives on in his five grandchildren: Thomas McDonald and his wife Megan, Kara McDonald and her husband Patrick Ferris, Alyssa Velez and her husband Ryan Velez, Kelsey Armiento and her husband Anthony, and Matthew McDonald and his wife Sherry. His memory will be cherished by his eleven great-grandchildren: Miles, Emma, Georgia, Juliette, Charlotte, Hadley, Vincent, Victoria, Juniper, Frederick, and Elodie.
Thomas's Southern roots and the bonds he formed within his coaching community were a significant part of his life, providing him with joy and companionship. He will be remembered for his kindness, his unyielding spirit, and his dedication to nurturing those around him.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of Thomas Bruce McDonald will be held on March 8, 2026, at 3:00 PM. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Thomas are invited to join in paying their respects to a man whose life was a testament to love, service, and community.
