Theodore W. Smith, known to friends and family as Ted, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, at the age of 54. He was surrounded by the love of his life, his husband Marc Ellis Holland, after a long and courageous battle, demonstrating the strength and resilience he was known for. Born on September 7, 1971, in Caledonia, NY, Ted was the beloved son of Frances Z. Smith and the late William A. Smith. He graduated from Avon High School in 1989 and went on to earn his degree from Oswego State and a Masters degree from Alfred University. Ted was a man of many talents and a passionate advocate for those in need. His career saw him wearing many hats, from working in college affairs to serving as a disaster relief worker with the Red Cross and a crisis counselor with BOCES. His dedication to helping others was unwavering, and he left a lasting impact on countless lives. In addition to his professional endeavors, Ted was a cherished member of the Rochester Gay Men's Chorus and an active participant in local theater groups. His love for performing and singing was infectious, and he brought joy to many through his vibrant performances. Ted was an avid Titanic enthusiast, loved History and travel, and was an amazing Dog Dad Ted married Marc on October 15, 2000, marking the beginning of a beautiful 25-year partnership that started in Pennsylvania. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. Ted was also deeply connected to his family, survived by his mother, Frances, and sisters Emily Van Dusen (Shawn Van Dusen), Catherine Smith, and Margaret Putman (David Putman). He was a cherished uncle to Evelyn and Ellie Van Dusen and Matthew Putman. Also many friends that Ted cherished with his whole heart. Known for his quick wit and genuine smile, Ted had a remarkable gift for making everyone around him feel welcome and valued. His knack for storytelling and humor brightened the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. Ted's kindness and generosity were unmatched, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all he encountered. A memorial service celebrating Ted's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ted's memory to a charity of your choice or an organization that supports disaster relief efforts, music, or theater, reflecting his passions and spirit. Ted's legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten, as his spirit lives on in the hearts of his loved ones.
