Theodore "Ted" Newman, a cherished, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2026, At Comfort Living Assisted living home. Born on June 23, 1940, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Ted was the beloved son of Theodore Newman Sr. and Veva Shaff. Throughout his life, Ted exemplified the virtues of Christianity, hard work, kindness, and generosity, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
In 1966, Ted found his life partner in Barbara Boven, and together they built a loving and remarkable family. Ted and Barbara shared a deep love and commitment to each other, raising their biological children and opening their hearts to foster children and grandchildren. Barbara preceded Ted in death, as did his parents and his two sisters, Wilma Bierenga and Judy Bowen. Ted is also predeceased by his daughters Ann Shantell, Kimberley, and Christina, and his granddaughter, Shantel.
Ted is survived by his children, Catherine Thomas, Sherlyn Longjohn (Donald), and Mark Newman. He was a devoted grandfather to Chad, Tara, TJ, Melissa, Stephanie, Kyle, and Kevin. Great-Grandfather of 21, and Great Great Grandfather of 8! His family was his greatest joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
A dedicated and skilled worker, Ted spent over 20 years as a plant electrician at Humphrey Products. He was also the co-owner of Timberlake Campground, which he and Barbara managed for 23 years. Ted's mechanical aptitude was legendary, and he possessed an uncanny ability to fix anything with patience and ingenuity.
Ted was a man of many interests, finding solace in deer hunting and fishing. He cherished time spent with family and friends, often engaging in spirited games of cribbage. His home was the heart of a weekly cribbage tournament, where laughter and camaraderie abounded.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Comfort Living Home for the exceptional care provided during Ted's final months and to Senior Care Partners Pace for their invaluable support throughout his illness and passing.
A celebration of Ted's life will be held on October 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM at The Venue @ 68, located at 68 E Michigan St. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the memory of a remarkable man whose life was a testament to love, generosity, and resilience.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Ted's memory may do so to a charity of their choice, reflecting the giving spirit that he embodied throughout his life. Ted will be dearly missed, but his legacy of love and kindness continues to inspire all who knew him.
