June 15, 1938 — March 25, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the peaceful passing of Thelma Joyce Gates on March 25, 2026. Thelma, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, departed this world in the embrace of eternal rest at the age of 87. Her transition was as gentle as her spirit, occurring in the care of a nurturing nursing facility where she was cherished by staff and visitors alike. Born on June 14, 1938, in the quaint town of Clinton, Pennsylvania, Thelma was the daughter of Thelma Hegner and Webster West. She was preceded in death by her devoted parents, her brother Buster West, and her sister Rita Pluechel. Her legacy, however, thrives in the lives of those she leaves behind. Thelma's journey through life was marked by her steadfast dedication to her family and community. In 1959, she married the love of her life, Robert Gates, and together they crafted a life filled with warmth and devotion until Robert’s passing on February 12 2023. Their union bore three wonderful children: Michael Gates, Nancy Zismann, and Carol Lippert, who, along with her surviving brothers Billy West and Ronald Hegner, remember her as a beacon of love and resilience. A proud graduate of Moon Area High School’s class of 1956, Thelma carried her education and values into her lifelong membership with the Sewickley United Methodist Church. Her faith was not only a cornerstone of her life but also a guiding light for her community engagements. She was actively involved in shaping young minds as a leader in both the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched. Thelma’s legacy is further carried forward by her six grandchildren and four precious great-grandchildren, who were the apples of her eye. Her nurturing spirit and gentle wisdom will forever echo in their hearts. A service celebrating Thelma's remarkable life will be held on September 6, 2026. In the nursing home where Thelma spent her final years, a plaque graces the wall, bearing the words from Psalm 71:9: "Cast me not off in the time of old age. Forsake me not when my strength faileth." This sentiment captures not only the ethos of the caregivers who surrounded her with love and dignity but also reflects the grace with which Thelma approached her twilight years. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of the nursing facility for their unwavering dedication and compassion. Your care and kindness made Thelma’s final chapter one of peace and contentment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Thelma's memory to the Sewickley United Methodist Church or to a local scouting organization, ensuring that her legacy of service continues to inspire future generations.
