It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Terry Lee Payne on April 19, 2026. Born on July 19, 1948, in Independence, Missouri, Terry spent 77 vibrant years sharing joy, laughter, and love with those fortunate enough to have known him. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void, yet his legacy of warmth and resilience will continue to inspire all who were touched by his presence.
Terry was the beloved son of the late Rose and Rex Payne, whom he held in the highest regard throughout his life. He was predeceased by his cherished brothers, Michael, David, and Dennis Payne, and his dear daughter, Patricia Boyer. Despite these profound losses, Terry remained a beacon of strength and love, reminding us all of the enduring bonds of family.
Terry is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanette Butcher, with whom he shared 27 wonderful years of marriage. Their union was a testament to true companionship, filled not with children of their own but with boundless love that enveloped their extended family. Terry’s legacy continues through his loving daughter, Melissa Kolath, his brother Dennis Payne, seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a piece of his spirit and zest for life.
A proud graduate of Odessa High School, Terry answered the call to serve his country, dedicating four years to the United States Army from 1966 to 1970. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for aviation, becoming a skilled airplane mechanic. In 1985, Terry's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish a successful roadside assistance business, which he operated with dedication until his health necessitated his retirement in 2010.
Terry was a man of diverse interests and hobbies, known for his love of hunting and fishing, and his remarkable talent for building model cars. His passion for all things Sci-Fi was infectious, and he often shared this enthusiasm with friends and family, sparking imaginations and creating lasting memories.
Despite being known as a strict father, Terry possessed a charisma that could light up a room, often eliciting smiles and laughter from those around him. His humor and warmth were a testament to his character, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.
A celebration of Terry’s life will be held on April 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at his residence, 614 Angus St., Independence, Missouri.
