March 31, 1950 — June 19, 2026

It is with heavy hearts but profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Terrence Michael Hemen, affectionately known as Mike, who departed this world on June 19, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on March 31, 1950, in Britton, South Dakota, to Loren and Connie (Cain) Hemen, Mike's journey was marked by love, service, and an unwavering commitment to community. Mike grew up in Hecla, South Dakota, where he forged lifelong friendships and graduated from Hecla High School in 1968. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Dakota State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972. Mike's passion for education was further fueled by his Master’s in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska in 1979. In 1971, Mike's heart found its truest companion when he married Lynne Olson in Sioux Falls, SD. Their union, built on love and unwavering support, flourished over the decades, and together they raised two wonderful children, Michelle (Joseph) Patrick and Brent Hemen, who were his pride and joy. Mike's life was characterized by service and dedication. Following his graduation, he served his country in the US Army from 1972 to 1974, stationed in Germany. His exemplary service was recognized with the Army Commendation Award for Meritorious Service and the Anschutz Marksmanship Award. After his military service, Mike returned to his passion for teaching and dedicated his career to nurturing young minds. From 1975 to 1985, he worked as a teacher, coach, and principal in Hartington, NE, before becoming a principal and special education director in Fort Calhoun, NE, where he served from 1985 to 2005. Mike concluded his career, leaving a lasting impact as a sixth-grade teacher in the Omaha Public Schools. A man of faith, Mike was deeply involved with Christ Community Church, where he served as a greeter, Sunday school teacher, and was a valued member of the Benevolence team alongside his wife, Lynne. His warm smile and genuine kindness were constants, making every visitor feel welcomed and valued. Mike's zest for life was evidenced in his hobbies. An avid archery hunter, he enjoyed the thrill of tournaments and the craftsmanship of making his own longbow. His love for bicycles took him across the scenic landscapes of Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, and on a remarkable journey from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Mike was known for his generosity, often repairing and building bicycles for friends and neighbors. A man who never met a stranger, Mike's ability to connect with others was unparalleled. Whether he was greeting a salesperson or engaging in a heartfelt conversation, he made everyone feel important and valued. Mike's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife Lynne, his daughter Michelle (Joseph) Patrick, his son Brent Hemen, and his sisters Jean (Mark) Lien and Jane (Dale) Martenson. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends whose lives he touched immeasurably. He is reunited in eternal peace with his parents, Loren and Connie, his brother Barry, and his sisters Laura Malard and Lynn Tabor. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at Christ Community Church, located at 404 S. 108th Ave., where friends and family will gather to honor a man whose life was a testament to love, service, and community. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Christ Community Church Great Commission Fund, ensuring that Mike’s spirit of generosity and service continues to thrive. Though Mike's physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit, infectious laughter, and loving heart will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
