TAWANA MCKENZIE

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Tawana McKenzie on September 3, 2026. Born on January 1, 1962, in Washington, DC, Tawana was a beacon of warmth and generosity, whose presence enriched the lives of those around her. Tawana was the beloved daughter of William Stanley Pannell and Betty Jean McKenzie Pannell, who have both preceded her in death, alongside her dear sister, Michelle Mozee. She is survived by her cherished children, Vernon McKenzie and Raymond McKenzie, who were the pride and joy of her life. Her legacy continues through her adored grandchildren, Vernon McKenzie Jr., Trevon McKenzie, and Zeus McKenzie. Tawana leaves behind her beloved sisters, Deborah Thompson and Carolyn Chase, and her nephews, Damon McKenzie and Cortrell Thompson, who held a special place in her heart. A proud graduate of McKinley High School in 1980, Tawana pursued further education at the University of Maryland, where she studied for two years. Her professional journey began in retail, but her talents soon led her to a career as an accountant. Later in life, she found fulfillment working as a security officer. Tawana's varied interests included avid reading, sewing, and crocheting, through which she expressed her creativity and love for beauty. Tawana's heart of gold was evident in her gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. Her home was a sanctuary for family and friends, a place where laughter was shared, and memories were made. Her kindness and generosity knew no bounds, and her spirit was a guiding light for all who knew her. A service to honor Tawana's life will be held at Horten Funeral Home, located at 600 Kennedy St NW, Washington, DC 20011. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, reflecting Tawana's giving nature and her commitment to helping others.
