In Loving Memory

Sylvia Louise (Williams) Dixon "Baby Sis"
June 30, 1943 — May 31, 2026
It is with profound sadness and yet, heartfelt gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the peaceful passing of Sylvia Louise (Williams) Dixon, affectionately known as "Baby Sis," on May 31, 2026. Sylvia left this world on a serene Sunday morning while preparing to do what she cherished most—teaching her beloved Sunday School class at Greater Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. She was 82 years old.
Born on June 30, 1943, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sylvia was the cherished daughter of Ernest Williams Sr. and Alice Mae (Satterfield) Williams, who predeceased her, along with her brothers Ernest Jr., Ocie, and Michael Williams. Sylvia's upbringing was deeply rooted in faith and community, values she carried throughout her life.
Sylvia was a proud alumna of Public School #37, Arsenal Technical High School, and Crispus Attucks High School, all in Indianapolis. Her career began at RCA, but she found her true calling at the Indiana School for the Deaf, from where she retired after many years of dedicated service.
In 1990, Sylvia found her lifelong partner and soulmate in London H. Dixon Sr. Their union was a beautiful tapestry of love, family, and faith, woven with the participation of all their children in their wedding ceremony. For 36 years, they shared a marriage filled with commitment, joy, and profound companionship.
Sylvia's life was a testament to service and devotion. A pillar of Greater Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church for more than 55 years, she enriched the lives of many through her leadership in the Junior Choir, the Inspirational Choir, and the Drill Team. As president of the Pastor's Aid Committee, she was instrumental in organizing the annual rummage sale to raise funds and was fondly known as the "Kitchen Lady" for her role in the Culinary Department. Sylvia’s passion for teaching was evident as she taught the adult Sunday School class, ensuring her lessons were always relevant and insightful.
Her love extended beyond her church community to her family, where she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband, London H. Dixon Sr.; her children: Lavennia L. Martin (Henry), Elise L. Legge, Tracey L. Legge, Scott V. Legge (Dana), and Frankie D. Vance (William); her step-children: Robert Dixon, London H. Dixon Jr. (Tony), Jerry Dixon, and Adrienne Alexander; her siblings: Donald L. Williams (Mary), Rev Sterling L. Williams (Carol), and Frieda L. Johnson (Larry). Sylvia's legacy continues through her 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 17 step-grandchildren, and 19 great step-grandchildren, all of whom she adored and cherished.
Sylvia was known for her quick wit, warm smile, and a heart that welcomed all. Her kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone she met, always advocating for the underdog and unafraid to speak her truth. An avid botanist, Sylvia found joy in nurturing her plants and garden, baking cakes for special occasions, and engaging in spirited games at family gatherings. Her most profound joy, however, was studying scripture, a testament to her unwavering faith and dedication to her Sunday School class.
A service celebrating Sylvia's remarkable life will be held on June 13, 2026, at noon at Greater Morning Star Baptist Church, located at 519 E. 23rd Street, Indianapolis, IN 46205. The family invites all who knew her to join them in honoring Sylvia's life, legacy, and memory.
The family extends their deepest appreciation for the many acts of kindness shown during this time of sorrow. Your gestures of love, support, and prayers have been a source of strength and comfort as we celebrate the life of our beloved wife, mother, and grandma.
