We celebrate the extraordinary life of Sylvester Mincey, Jr., born on September 28, 1954, in the warm embrace of Lyons, Georgia, Toombs County. On April 20, 2026, Sylvester peacefully departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to family and community. Sylvester was the cherished son of Sylvester Mincey, Sr. and Ruthie Mae Cobb. He is predeceased by his father and his beloved sisters, Diane Jones and Vanessa Tillman-Lee, as well as a brother named William Jr. Though our hearts are heavy with his passing, we find solace in the memories he created with us. A proud product of Naranja Elementary School and South Dade High School in Miami, Florida, Sylvester forged lifelong friendships and fond memories before stepping into the honorable path of service. From 1974 to 1979, he served his country with pride as a Corporal in the United States Army, where his courage and commitment were commendable. Upon returning to civilian life, Sylvester dedicated his career to being a truck driver, tirelessly working to provide for his family. His talents extended beyond the wheel, as he practiced carpentry with skill and passion, often building or fixing with his gifted hands. His work ethic was a testament to his resilience and love for his family. Sylvester was a devoted member of the Eastside Church of Christ in Jacksonville, Florida, where his faith and fellowship with his church family enriched his spiritual journey. His days were filled with simple joys—cheering on his beloved Miami Dolphins, casting a line while fishing, and nurturing plants in his garden. He found fulfillment in these pursuits and the time spent outdoors with loved ones. Known for his warm smile and giving spirit, Sylvester had an innate ability to make others feel loved and welcomed. His generosity, kindness, and compassion were the hallmarks of his character, and he was always ready to lend a hand, offer advice, or simply be there for someone in need. Sylvester leaves behind a loving family who will carry his memory forward: his devoted mother, Ruthie Mae Cobb; his children, Sylvester Mincey III, Kimberly Mincey, Bernard Mincey, Brandon Mincey, and Lamar Mincey; his extended daughters, Velma Forbes and Gaynell Wright; and his adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his sister, Lucile Mincey Dorsey, his brother Jeffrey Jones Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Sylvester’s life and legacy. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Tara Garden Chapel for their care and professionalism during this time of bereavement.
