In Loving Memory

Sybil Jane Sweeny
September 1, 1942 — October 28, 2026
Sybil Sweeny, a cherished mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2026, at the age of 84, with her two beloved sons by her side. After a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s, Sybil leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and resilience. Born on September 1, 1942, in Detroit, MI, to Aloysius and Mary Kuczynski, Sybil was the embodiment of kindness and warmth.
Sybil was a proud graduate of Mercy High School in 1960 and went on to achieve a double major in education and drama from Mercy College in 1964. Her passion for teaching led her to serve on an Air Force Base in Japan during the Vietnam War, where she touched the lives of many young students. This experience ignited a lifelong dedication to education and service.
Her professional journey was as diverse as it was impressive. Sybil began her career as an elementary school teacher before transitioning into a successful 17-year tenure as an award-winning marketing and sales professional at Ralston Purina. She later returned to her first love, teaching, at Cherry Hill Charter School in Detroit, before retiring in sunny California.
Sybil’s interests were as vibrant as her personality. An avid enthusiast of arts and crafts, she found joy in creating stained glass, writing, and painting. Her passion for "thrifting" was unparalleled, and she delighted in finding hidden treasures. Sybil was a woman of profound empathy and strength, always placing the needs of others before her own. She was a supportive and protective mother, a nonjudgmental friend, and a beloved figure to all who knew her.
Sybil is lovingly survived by her sons, Quinn and Adam Sweeny; her sister, Bernadette Senn, and brother-in-law Larry Senn; her brother, Chris Kuczynski, and sister-in-law Charlotte Temple; her sister, Mary Griffith, and brother-in-law Pat Griffith; as well as her nephew Patrick Griffith, niece Kendra Senn, and nephews Ethan Kuczynski and Logan Senn. She is predeceased by her sister Francine Kuczynski, her parents, her brother Carl Kuczynski, and her nephew Ben Griffith.
A service to honor and celebrate Sybil’s life will be held on November 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Heritage-Dilday Funeral Home, 17911 Beach Blvd, Huntington Beach, CA 92647. The family kindly suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice in Sybil’s memory.
Sybil's family would like to leave you with her favorite saying, "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it," a testament to her pragmatic and hopeful outlook on life. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
