July 16, 1955 — February 28, 2026

It is with profound sadness and heartfelt love that we announce the passing of Suzan Michelle Kaufman, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Suzan departed this world on February 28, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her family, after a brief yet courageous battle with cancer. She was 70 years old. Born on July 16, 1955, in North Baltimore, Ohio, Suzan was the cherished daughter of Thomas and Carolyn Kaufman, who preceded her in death. From a young age, Suzan exhibited a zest for life and a deep curiosity for the world around her. She carried these qualities with her throughout her life, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know her. Suzan graduated from Elmwood High School in 1973 and pursued higher education with passion and determination. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from The Ohio State University in 1981 and later obtained her Masters of Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati in 1985. Her professional journey began as a cardio rehabilitation specialist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL, before she found her true calling in human resources at Dollar Tree Stores' corporate headquarters, where she retired as the Vice President of Human Resources. On January 11, 1997, Suzan married the love of her life, William Jeffery Frizzell. Together, they shared 29 wonderful and adventurous years, filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. Suzan's greatest joy came from her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Jeff, her loving son, Devin Frizzell, and her treasured granddaughters, Violet and Penelope Frizzell, who were the light of her life. She also leaves behind her dear sisters, Cathy Wagner and Peggy Philo, who were her lifelong confidantes and friends. Suzan had a profound love for learning and adventure. She was a level one wine sommelier and delighted in sharing her knowledge and passion for wine with others. An avid golfer, cigar aficionado, and cyclist, she lived life with vigor and enthusiasm. Suzan was a workout fanatic, impressively undertaking box jumps and clean & jerks even after turning 70. Her competitive spirit shone brightly as she participated in the Rock-in-Roll half marathon and the Sandman Triathlon. Yet, it was her insatiable love for reading that truly defined her quest for knowledge—she read an astonishing 93 books in 2020 alone. Suzan's warmth and generosity extended beyond her immediate circle. She was Vice Chairman of the Norfolk Public School Board, where she positively impacted countless lives. Her mentorship and kindness were a testament to her belief in the potential of every individual. A collector of art and wine, she found beauty in the world and shared it with those around her. Her love for animals was evident in the many dogs she adored over the years, each bringing her immense joy. As we bid farewell to Suzan, her family expresses deep gratitude to the staff at Sentara Leigh Hospital and Sentara Home Care Services for their compassionate care. Special thanks are also extended to the friends and family who provided unwavering support and comfort during her final days. In accordance with her wishes, a private funeral service will be held on February 28, 2026, to honor and celebrate Suzan's remarkable life. While we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of love, strength, and inspiration that will forever remain in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a charity of one's choice in Suzan's memory, ensuring her spirit of giving continues to touch lives. May her soul rest in peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
