Susan Schaffer Campbell
October 28, 1943 — May 21, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Susan Schaffer Campbell on May 21, 2026, in New London, Connecticut. Born on October 28, 1943, in Rochester, Pennsylvania, Susan, affectionately known as Sue, peacefully concluded her earthly journey at the age of 82.
Sue was the beloved daughter of the late Robert J. and Dorothy Bauer Schaffer. Raised with love and a strong sense of community, Sue embodied these values throughout her life. She attended Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1961. Her love for learning and nurturing spirit led her to Slippery Rock State College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.
In 1970, Sue married the love of her life, Robert Cline Campbell, in Groton, Connecticut. Their union, which lasted until Robert's passing, was a testament to their unwavering devotion, shared dreams, and mutual respect. Together, they built a life filled with love, joy, and adventure.
Sue's dedication to education was evident in her long and impactful career. She began as a First Grade teacher at Gales Ferry Elementary School in Gales Ferry, Connecticut. Later, she served as a substitute teacher in both Frederick County, Maryland, and Old Lyme, Connecticut, while her daughter was of school age. Sue's passion for teaching and commitment to her students remained steadfast until her retirement in 2003 from Regional School District 18 in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
Sue was an active member of several community organizations, including the Rainbow Girls in her youth, Eastern Star (Bay View Lodge, Niantic, CT), Ellwood City Saxon Club, Old Lyme Fire Department Auxiliary, American Legion, and the Lymes' Senior Center, where she served as a former board member. She also volunteered as a Meals on Wheels driver for the Estuary Council of Seniors, always willing to lend a hand to those in need.
Her interests were as varied as they were enriching. Sue was a trivia buff with a passion for American history, an enthusiast of Scottish games, and an eager learner of the bagpipes. Family camping trips and sailing adventures aboard "L'il Bippie" with her husband Soupy were among her cherished memories. Her knitting needles were seldom idle, as she created loving keepsakes for those she held dear. Above all, Sue found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren, supporting and celebrating their every endeavor.
Sue was steadfast, loyal, and loving, with a witty sense of humor that endeared her to all who knew her. Her life's mission was to care for those she loved, offering unwavering support and nurturing guidance.
Sue is survived by her loving daughter, Amanda Campbell-Berry, and her son-in-law, Rob Berry, along with her cherished grandchildren, Audrey and Oliver Berry of Old Lyme, and Ava Berry of Hartford, Connecticut. She is predeceased by her devoted husband, Robert Cline Campbell, whose memory she cherished deeply.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Michael Feltes for his indispensable support during Sue's final years, and to the hospice team at L&M Hospital for their compassion and professionalism, ensuring her final days were filled with peace and comfort.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Sue's memory to the Old Lyme Fire Department, reflecting her lifelong dedication to community service.
Sue's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and selfless service. As we celebrate her legacy, we find solace in knowing that her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
