It is with a profound sense of loss and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our mother Susan Houston Reid on March 14, 2026, at the age of 84. Susan, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully departed this life in her sleep, surrounded by the love and warmth of her family, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Her life journey began in San Marcos, Texas, as the cherished daughter of Ralph and Francys Houston.
Susan’s early years were marked by a precocious mind and a thirst for knowledge. She graduated as co-salutatorian from San Marcos High School in 1958, sharing the honor with Walter Porter Jr. She pursued higher education with vigor, graduating cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Radcliffe College in 1962, and later earning her Master of Library Science from Simmons College in 1964.
Susan married the love of her life, William G. Reid, on June 15, 1962. Their marriage, which lasted until William's passing on March 31, 2024, was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised two wonderful children, instilling in them the values of integrity, kindness, and a passion for social justice.
Throughout her career, Susan made significant contributions to the field of information services. She held esteemed positions as a reference librarian at the University of Texas at Austin, production manager and writer for the Texas Observer, and Director of Information Services for Austin Community College. Her professional endeavors also included impactful work with the Texas Department of Agriculture, Texas Cancer Council, and Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission.
A stalwart advocate for social justice and political engagement, Susan was a cherished member of the First Unitarian Universalist of Austin for over 30 years. Life long member of League of Women Voter's from 1970. She served as President of the League of Women Voters of the Austin Area in 1975 and was instrumental in establishing a library within the Travis County Jail. Her commitment to civic duty was further exemplified through her work with the Mayor's Electric Rate Commission, Austin Library Commission, and Austin Library Foundation.
Susan’s passions extended beyond her professional life. She was an avid reader, a lover of literature and art, and a dedicated environmental advocate. Her fascination with the world of ideas was evident in her lively participation in book clubs and her deep appreciation for the works of Jane Austen, particularly "Sense and Sensibility." She was a traveler at heart, finding joy in exploring new places and cultures, always with a book in hand. She was a remarkable walker and enjoyed her daily walks until the end.
Her home was a haven of warmth and hospitality, where her infectious smile and laughter left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know her. Susan's ability to stay calm under pressure, her empathy, and her unwavering commitment to equality and respect for all were qualities that endeared her to her family and community.
Susan is predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Francys Houston; her husband, William Reid; and her daughter, Karen Elizabeth Reid. She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience through her surviving children, son Robert Reid and his spouse Nelma Sanchez, and daughter Sarah Tresca and her husband Michael Tresca. She was the proud grandmother of Anthony and Isabella Tresca, who carry forward her spirit of curiosity and compassion. She is also survived by her cousin Glen "Bud" McNew and his spouse Diane McNew, along with their children, and a multitude of close friends she considered chosen family.
A Celebration of Susan's life will be held on June 6, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 4700 Grover Ave, Austin, TX 78756. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Susan’s memory to the Diabetes Association, ACLU, West Austin Democrats, or Planned Parenthood, your local PBS or NPR or public library in your area.
As we mourn the loss of a remarkable woman, we also celebrate her life and the indelible impact she made on her family, friends, and community. Susan Houston Reid was a beacon of grace, intellect, and unwavering principle. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever inspire those she leaves behind.
