In Loving Memory

Susan Godwin
October 4, 1946 — July 1, 2026
It is with deep sadness and enduring love that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Susan Carrington Godwin, who departed from this world on July 1, 2026, at the age of 79. Her departure marked the end of a long and courageous journey with dementia, surrounded by the warmth of her home and the love of her family.
Born on October 4, 1946, Susan was the cherished daughter of Benjamin F. Carrington, Jr. and Florence Tichnell Carrington, both of whom predeceased her.
Susan shared a beautiful life with her devoted husband, Jerry Godwin, her steadfast partner and confidant. Together, they built a family that became the center of Susan's world. She was the loving mother of two daughters, Shanda (Gary) Williams and Shelly (Ruben) Wehunt, who continue to carry forward her legacy of kindness and creativity. Susan's heart was further expanded with the joy of her grandchildren: Tyler Wehunt (Madison), Gracie Williams (Ryan), Nate Wehunt (Macie), Gavin Williams, and Tori Wehunt, as well as her great-grandchildren, Miablake and Colter Wehunt, who brought endless smiles to her days.
Her brother, Danny (Carrol) Tichnell, and nephew, Josh Tichnell, shared a special bond with Susan, cherishing her spirited humor.
Her sister-in-laws Joyce Brown and Kathy West, brother-in-law Jim (Judy) Godwin, and a host of nieces and nephews also held a very special place in Susan's heart. Susan was honored to be considered one of the original Godwin Girls.
Susan is predeceased by her parents, her in-laws Almer and Dimple Godwin, sister-in-laws Brenda Holmes and Shirley McDaniel, and her lifelong best friend, Peggy Allman.
Throughout her life, Susan displayed a fierce dedication to her family and community. She initially brought her talents to Liberty National, but soon chose to devote her time to raising her daughters, becoming an active presence in the PTA at Zinnerman Elementary during the 1980s. Her commitment to community service extended to her work at Weldon's Pharmacy in the 1990s, where her effervescent spirit touched the lives of many.
A woman of faith, Susan attended Heritage Christian Center alongside her dear friends, David and Brenda Winslett. She contributed her artistic talents to the church, enlivening the community with her creative calendars and graphics on the bulletin board. Her participation in women's study groups was not only a testament to her faith but also to her belief in the power of friendship and shared wisdom.
Susan's hands were never idle; gifted with creativity, she crafted handmade treasures for birthdays, Christmas, and the cherished annual Godwin Girls trips. Her quick wit and infectious laugh were her signature, a beacon of light even in the darkest parts of her battle with dementia. She maintained her humor and grace, offering laughter and light to those around her until she could no longer communicate.
A service celebrating Susan's remarkable life will be held on July 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Heritage Christian Center, located at 4215 Tove Blvd, Hueytown, AL 35023. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Family and friends are invited to join in remembering a life lived with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to those she held dear.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Susan's memory to organizations supporting dementia research, as a tribute to her courageous battle and enduring spirit. Susan Carrington Godwin leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, a testament to a life well-lived and a heart well-loved. Her memory will forever be a blessing to all who knew her.
