Obituary for Sue Calloway-Mathews August 23, 1941 - June 12, 2026 With heavy hearts and profound gratitude, we announce the peaceful passing of Sue Calloway-Mathews, who departed this world on June 12, 2026, at the age of 84. Born in the close-knit community of Holly Grove, Arkansas, Sue's life was a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering dedication. Sue was the cherished daughter of the late Rudolph J. Calloway and Virginia Smith-Calloway. She grew up alongside her beloved brothers, Douglas and Jerry Calloway, who survive her, carrying forward the legacy of their close family bonds. In 1961, while attending Hendrix College, Sue met the love of her life, John Gatewood Mathews DDS. Their love story, spanning 54 beautiful years, was a beacon of commitment and partnership. Together, they built a family filled with love, laughter, and warmth. Sue was predeceased by her dear John, but their legacy continues through their children, Jill Mathews and Dr. Steven Mathews, and their treasured grandchildren, John, Zach, and Avery Mathews. Sue's career was one of creativity and passion, as she successfully ran Sue Mathews Interiors in Helena, Arkansas for a remarkable 25 years. Her eye for design and her ability to transform spaces were admired by many. Yet, it was her role as a pianist for the Holly Grove Church that truly captured her essence—she brought music and joy to her community, sharing her talents for many years. A woman of many talents, Sue was also an exceptional athlete, having been an all-state basketball player in high school for two consecutive years. Her competitive spirit and dedication to excellence were evident in all she pursued. Sue's presence was magnetic; she had a smile that could light up any room and an infectious laugh that spread joy to all fortunate enough to hear it. Her kindness, warmth, and genuine love for others left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Sue leaves behind not just her immediate family, but a loving extended family, including nieces and nephews Stephanie Wildman, Ben Calloway, Jason Calloway, and Michael Calloway, and great-nieces and nephews Virginia and Willa Wildman, Cab, Josephine, Dylan, Kstra, Hank, Daisy, Frank, Ford, and John Calloway. Each held a special place in her heart. A celebration of Sue's incredible life will be held on June 26, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Holly Grove Presbyterian Church, located at 244 E. 2nd St., Holly Grove, AR 72069. Family and friends are invited to gather in love and remembrance. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Sue's honor to St. Jude, an organization close to her heart.
