Obituary of Stuart Russell Roddy
It is with deep sorrow and immense gratitude for his life that we announce the passing of Stuart Russell Roddy, who left us on September 30, 2026, at the age of 41. Stuart was born on May 29, 1985, in DeLand, Florida, to Richard R. Roddy and Deborah L. Ziegler Roddy. He departed this world after a courageous battle with a very aggressive and rare form of cancer, Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Abdominal Wall, which spread to his liver, pancreas, stomach, and lymph nodes.
Stuart was predeceased by his beloved grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth Ziegler, and George and Elizabeth Roddy. He was also loved by his uncles, Ronald Ziegler (Jackie), Charles Zeigler (Ann), and George Roddy (Stephanie), and his aunts, Patricia Pierson (Bob) and Elizabeth (Liz) Tetreault.
He is survived by his devoted parents, Richard and Deborah Roddy, his sister, Shauna Renee' (Roddy) Ducharme (Braden), as well as his nephews, Devin Robert Roddy-Rivera, Cayde Legend Rivera, and Anthony Ford Maddox Post.
His Aunt, Barbara Nero and Uncle Edmund Roddy.
Stuart's journey through life was marked by his profound advocacy for children and adults with disabilities. Born with a heart defect and being a third-generation Diethylstilbestrol (DES) child, Stuart was unique in every way. Despite facing numerous medical challenges, including living with pain and frequent hospital visits, Stuart was a beacon of joy and purity. His laughter and infectious smile, which formed a distinctive "X" between his eyes, brought happiness to everyone around him. We would call him "X" nose.
Stuart attended Easter Seals/Hillcrest, Hurst, Pine Trail and Pathways Elementary, and Atlantic High School, where he graduated and formed lasting bonds with his teachers and classmates. He had a special talent for making friends and was known for his endearing charm and ability to bring people together. Stuart loved playing with his sister and the neighborhood children, and his home was always open to friends, especially his dear friend Nicholas L., who shared countless sleepovers and adventures with him.
An extraordinary advocate from a young age, Stuart made significant strides in promoting the rights of disabled children and adults. He traveled to Tallahassee, Florida, to speak to senators and legislators, advocating for the Medicaid Home and Community-Based Waiver, which allowed children and adults with disabilities to live at home with their families.
He also opened the way for his friends to have Educatable and Trainable Classrooms. His efforts resulted in the creation of new educational classes for disabled children in mainstreaming in Volusia County.
Stuart's legacy is one of love, compassion, and change. His impact on the world will be remembered by all who knew him, and his spirit will continue to inspire future generations. He was deeply loved by his family, friends, and the entire community, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts.
A celebration of Stuart's life will be held on October 9, 2026, at 1:30 PM at Lohman Funeral Home, located at 733 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
