Steven Plunkett Woodward

Steven Plunkett Woodward, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and compassionate counselor, passed from this life on July 30, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on June 3, 1950, in Aiken, South Carolina, Steven was the beloved son of the late Jack Plunkett Woodward and Lorenz Smith Woodward. He grew up in a home filled with love and learning, alongside his siblings, Timothy Earl Woodward and Vicki Woodward Hardt. Steven's life was marked by a deep dedication to helping others, which was evident in his distinguished career as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Supervisor for Professional Counselors. After graduating from Aiken High School in 1968, Steven pursued higher education at the University of South Carolina, where he earned a B.S. degree in Psychology in 1973 and a Master's degree in Counseling in 1977. His career spanned several esteemed positions, including roles at the Children's Unit at the S. C. State Hospital, Orangeburg Mental Health Center, Lexington Mental Health Center, Director of Charter Rivers Counseling Center, the S. C. Department of Corrections, and in private practice. Steven’s gentle spirit and profound ability to listen made him a cherished guide to many seeking solace and understanding. On April 26, 1975, Steven married the love of his life, Jayne Self Woodward, and together they built a beautiful family. He is survived by his sons, Steven Brad Woodward (Kristy) and Todd Garrett Woodward (Kim), who continue to carry forward his legacy of kindness and integrity. Steven's pride and joy were his grandchildren, Ava, Emmy, and Alex Woodward, as well as his step-grandchildren, Lily Margaret, Eleanor, and Bradley O'Leary. He was a grandfather who adored his grandchildren and was adored in return, sharing countless moments of joy and laughter with them. Steven was also a man of faith, actively involved in his beloved McGregor Presbyterian Church. There, he served as an elder and contributed to the Pastoral Nominating Committee, always striving to nurture a community grounded in love and service. Gardening was one of Steven’s greatest passions, and in 2025 he proudly became a Master Gardener. He found solace and joy in tending to the earth, a reflection of his nurturing character. Steven was also an avid sportsman, enjoying both softball and tennis. He led his tennis team to Nationals in Surprise, Arizona, showcasing his leadership and team spirit. Those who knew Steven will remember him for his quiet strength, his gentle demeanor, and his unwavering dedication to listening and supporting those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and love that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. A service to honor Steven's life will be held at McGregor Presbyterian Church, located at 6505 St. Andrews Rd., Columbia, SC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steven's memory to McGregor Presbyterian Church, continuing his commitment to the faith community he held dear. Steven Plunkett Woodward’s life was a testament to the power of love and service. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
