Born on November 9, 1959, in Abilene, Texas, Steve was the cherished son of Wendell and Shirley Mathis, who have both predeceased him. Steve's early years were spent in the heart of Abilene, where he cultivated lifelong friendships and began to develop the sparkling personality for which he would be fondly remembered. A proud graduate of Abilene High School in 1979, Steve was known among his peers for his quick wit and infectious smile, always ready with a joke to lighten the mood and brighten the day of those around him. He pursued higher education at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he earned his degree in 1989. It was during these formative years that Steve further honed his ability to connect with people from all walks of life, a skill that would serve him well throughout his life. Steve was a man who never met a stranger. His kindness and warmth were as expansive as the Texas sky under which he was raised. He had an unmatched gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued, a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. His laughter was a balm, his presence a comfort, and his friendship a treasure. Though his path was occasionally marked by challenges, Steve navigated life's ups and downs with grace and resilience, always emerging with a renewed sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. His son, Dylan Mathis, survives him, carrying forward the legacy of love, laughter, and kindness that defined Steve's life. In addition to his family, Steve's life was enriched by his involvement in the community, where he was admired not just for his humor but for his sincere dedication to helping others. His kindness touched countless lives, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
