Stephen was the beloved son of the late Charlie Wright James and Ethel Lee Hamilton, who now warmly welcome him into their embrace. His legacy of love continues through his devoted wife, Joy Flynn James, with whom he shared a life filled with laughter, adventure, and deep companionship.
Stephen's legacy is carried forward by his children, who were the pride and joy of his life: Stephen Christopher James, Charlie Wright James, Kristina Michelle James, and Kathie Renee James. Each of them carries a piece of Stephen’s wisdom, humor, and compassion, ensuring that his spirit remains alive in the hearts of those who knew him.
A cherished grandfather, Stephen leaves behind seven grandchildren who adored him, along with eight great-grandchildren who filled his later years with joy and renewed energy. His greatest pleasure was found in the simple moments spent with family—sharing stories, imparting wisdom, and nurturing the bonds that will forever unite them.
Stephen dedicated his life to his family and community, always putting others before himself. His career was marked by integrity and dedication, and his personal life was enriched by his love for music, storytelling, and the gentle art of gardening. He found serenity in nature and took great joy in tending to his garden, a sanctuary where he taught his family the virtues of patience and the beauty of nurturing growth.
The celebration of Stephen's life will be held on June 22, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Lea Funeral Home, located at 2500 Poole Rd, Raleigh, NC. Wake will be held on June 21, 2026, at 2:00 PM. Family and friends are warmly invited to join us in remembering Stephen’s remarkable journey, sharing stories that illustrate his full and generous heart, and bidding him a fond farewell.
As we mourn his passing, we are comforted by the knowledge that Stephen’s legacy will continue to thrive in the hearts of his family and friends. He leaves us richer in spirit, having taught us that life’s true measure is found in the love and kindness we extend to others.
