With profound sorrow and heartfelt gratitude, we announce the passing of Stephen Thomas Powers, a beloved husband, stepfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Steve left this world on March 4, 2026, in a tragic automobile accident. Born on September 13, 1970, in Liberty, New York, Steve was a beacon of warmth and kindness whose legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Steve was the cherished son of the late Thomas Robert Powers and Janet Dorothy Powers. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kristin Powers, with whom he shared 14 wonderful years of marriage, having wed on June 25, 2011. He was a stepfather to Paige Suarez and Connor Ernst. His family extended beyond bloodlines to include his sisters, Donna McKinney (husband Jim) and Nancy Harris (husband Royal), and his stepmother, Gwyn Powers. Steve was a proud uncle to Avery and Mallory McKinney, as well as Jacob and Nathan Harris. Brother in-law to Kimberly (husband Jeremy and nephew Nathanial) and Marc (nieces Sydney and Lara and nephew Max). His love and generosity extended to his cousins and his incredible lifelong friends, including Lisa, Becka, John, and Amy, who were as close as family.
Steve's educational journey began at Overton High School, where he graduated in 1988. He went on to earn a B.A. in Liberal Arts, majoring in English, from the University of Tennessee, a testament to his lifelong passion for learning and literature. His academic excellence was recognized through his membership in prestigious societies such as Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Beta Phi, and the Golden Key National Honor Society.
Professionally, Steve was a dedicated and respected figure in the field of logistics and service management. His career spanned roles such as Regional Field Service Coordinator at Whittle Communications, Operations Manager at Perfection Services, Supply Chain Manager at Ritway, and Service Logistics Manager at Hirsch Solutions. He concluded his esteemed career as a Dispatcher at Yancey Rents, where his colleagues admired his commitment and leadership.
Steve's life was rich with interests and passions that brought joy to himself and others. He was an accomplished trumpet player who once marched in the Rose Parade during high school. His adventurous spirit took him to Germany as an exchange student, fostering a lifelong friendship with Carsten, whom he later sponsored in the U.S. A cherished member of fantasy baseball and football leagues for over 30 years, Steve was an avid sports enthusiast, especially for the Tennessee Volunteers. His love for animals was evident in the care he provided to his pets, and he was renowned for his appreciation of good food, which he joyfully shared with friends and family.
Steve's warmth, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his loved ones left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. He embraced life with enthusiasm and compassion, qualities that endeared him to everyone he met. His legacy of love and kindness will continue to touch the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
