Celebrating the Life of Stephen Augustus Cunningham
It is with a profound sense of loss, yet a deep gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Stephen Augustus Cunningham, who left us peacefully on May 15, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on September 21, 1945, in the serene town of Round Hill District, St Elizabeth, Jamaica, Stephen's journey through life was rich with love, laughter, and resilience.
Stephen was the beloved son of Gertrude Louise Wedderburn and James Peter Cunningham. He grew up in a close-knit family, sharing his childhood with his brothers Ivan, Washington, Rupert, Burke and Mervin, as well as his sisters Victoria, Linda, Cinderella and Sarah. The bonds of family were a cornerstone of Stephen’s life, and he carried those values with him throughout his days.
In 1968, Stephen emigrated to the United States in search of better opportunities for his family. His uncle Andy Cunningham provided guidance and support in this new chapter. In 197x, he embarked on a new chapter with his cherished wife, Gloria Drummond, with whom he shared over 50 wonderful years. Their union was blessed with a son, Rodney Cunningham, and together they nurtured a blended family in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Stephen's educational journey began in the local schools of Mountainside, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, where he laid the foundation for a life of hard work and dedication. He carved out a distinguished career as a machine operator at Associated Springs and Barnes Group in Bristol, CT, where his work ethic and commitment were admired by all who knew him.
Stephen's legacy continues through his surviving children, Donovan A Cunningham (Catherine), Tatecia A Cunningham, and Marlene M Stephenson (John), as well as his adored grandchildren Marcia Stephenson, Domonique Cunningham, Jalen Stephenson, and Shantel Cunningham. His great-grandchildren, Cameron Henderson, Cambrell Henderson, Gisselle Ortiz, and Kross Jones, will forever carry forward his spirit and love. Also left to mourn him are his step children Perlita Chung (Wayne), Mark Bent, Larry Demetrius (Sandra), Aldith Demetrius (Jason). Stephen is also survived by brother Mervin Williams and sister Cinderella McKnight of Jamaica.
Stephen was pre-deceased by his parents, son Rodney, grandson John, sisters Victoria, Linda, and Sarah, brothers Ivan, Washington and Rupert.
A man of deep faith, Stephen was a devoted member of Grace Baptist Church in Waterbury, CT, where he found community and purpose. His love for cricket, a game he played with passion since his youth, was matched only by his enthusiasm for dominoes, basketball, and American football. Stephen was an active participant in local cricket organizations and West Indian clubs, where his quick wit and storytelling prowess endeared him to many. His gift for humor and his talent for assigning amusing nicknames left a lasting impression, creating cherished memories filled with laughter.
On June 12, 2026, at 12:00 PM, family and friends will gather to honor Stephen’s life at Grace Baptist Church, located at 65 Kingsbury Street, Waterbury, CT 06702.
