Spencer Franklin Mulkey

May 18, 1945 — May 6, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Spencer Franklin Mulkey, who left this world on May 6, 2026, cradled in the love of his cherished wife, Frances, and serenaded by the sound of his own heavenly voice. Born on May 18, 1945, in Greenwood, South Carolina, Spencer’s life was a testament to the grace, love, and music he so cherished. Spencer was the beloved son of James Monroe Mulkey and Eunice Evelyn (Thompson) Mulkey. His early life in Greenwood was the beginning of a journey that would see him touch countless lives with his kindness, integrity, and unwavering faith. He was predeceased by his parents as well as his siblings, Sara Evelyn (Mulkey) Cox, Mary "Pat" Patricia (Mulkey) Burton, and James Thompson Mulkey. He is survived by his devoted wife, Frances Ann (Fike) Mulkey, alongside numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who carry forward his legacy of love. Spencer and Frances shared a beautiful love story that began with a first kiss in 1965 and blossomed into over 57 years of marriage. They were best friends and soulmates, partners in every sense, cherishing each moment together. Their union began on August 10, 1968, in El Paso, Texas, and was built on a foundation of faith, love, and music. A gifted musician, Spencer’s passion for singing began at the tender age of nine. His rich, classical tenor voice was honed through years of dedication and study, culminating in a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1972, followed by a Master of Education from West Texas State University in 1977. As a choir director, he inspired young musicians in Martin, South Dakota, and El Paso, Texas, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his students and the choirs he led to numerous accolades. Spencer’s career evolved into school administration, but his deep love for music never waned. Encouraged by family, he returned to singing in his later years, captivating audiences across the United States with a repertoire that echoed the styles of Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, and Frank Sinatra. His wife, Frances, often said she fell in love with him all over again every time she heard him sing. Spencer’s voice was not merely a talent but a gift he shared generously, performing for charities, senior groups, and church congregations. Beyond music, Spencer’s entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly through various ventures, from owning the Blue Spruce RV Park in Colorado to a bakery, donut shop, and auto paint and body shop in Texas. His adaptability and zest for life were evident in his ability to turn each endeavor into a success, all while supporting Frances in her career in air traffic control. Spencer was a man of towering stature and presence, both physically and spiritually. His friends and family describe him as a Renaissance Man, a beacon of moral integrity, empathy, and intellect. He was a deep thinker, a gentle soul, and a motivator who encouraged others to reach beyond their own expectations. His faith in God was his guiding light, and he lived each day to the fullest, sharing joy and kindness with all he met. In his final days, Spencer fought a courageous battle with metastatic melanoma, facing each challenge with grace and dignity. Frances wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Community Healthcare of Texas for their compassionate hospice care and to Harbor Lakes Nursing and Rehab for their sensitive and caring support during these difficult times. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Community Healthcare of Texas, a non-profit hospice organization that provided Spencer with exceptional care. Spencer Franklin Mulkey was an extraordinary man whose life was a symphony of faith, love, and music. His legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we honor his memory, may we find comfort in knowing that he is now embraced by his Heavenly Father, where his voice will forever sing in eternal peace.
