It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Sonya Denise Alexander, who departed this life on April 23, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Sonya was born on February 22, 1958, in Tarboro, North Carolina, to Joan Ziegler and Aaron Hendricks. Her life, marked by resilience, devotion, and an unwavering faith, was a testament to the strength and love she shared with all who knew her. Sonya was predeceased by her beloved father, Aaron Hendricks Sr.; her siblings, Aaron Hendricks Jr., Felicia Hendricks, and Reuben Hendricks; and her cherished husband, Walter Alexander. She is survived by her devoted children, Latitisha Hendricks and Tamikka Debroux; her treasured grandchildren, Christian Williams, Daniel Williams, and Conner Echols; and her great-grandchild, Zairo Williams. Sonya also leaves behind her loving mother, Joan Ziegler, and siblings, Carl Hendricks (Sharon), Cleveland Hendricks, Otis McDonald, and Leondas Hendricks (Frances), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever cherish her memory. Sonya was a woman of remarkable strength and purpose. She married Walter Alexander in 1989 in Greensboro, North Carolina, and together they shared 25 years of marriage, raising two wonderful children in a home filled with love and laughter. Her educational journey led her to Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, North Carolina, where she earned her GED and a certification as a nursing assistant. She later attended Strayer University, furthering her knowledge and skills. Sonya’s career was a tapestry woven with dedication and compassion. She worked at Sears in the warehouse and production, at Industries of The Blind operating factory sewing machines, and at Moses Cone Hospital as a nursing assistant. Her passion for caring for others led her to work as a private duty nursing assistant, where her generous spirit and giving nature touched countless lives. A devoted member of the Sanctuary of Deliverance Church in Greensboro, North Carolina, Sonya was named the church's poet-laureate in 2008. Her love for Jesus and daily scripture reading was at the heart of who she was. She lived to share her relationship with God with everyone she encountered, embodying the message of Galatians 5:13, "Serve one another humbly in love." Sonya was known for her strong-mindedness and direct nature, always delivering her truths with transparency, believing that honesty would triumph over false narratives. Her love for family and friends was evident in her passion for cooking and preparing meals, creating cherished memories around the dinner table. Though she dreamed of traveling to Paris, her greatest journeys were those spent surrounded by her family, grandchildren, and close friends. A celebration of Sonya’s life will take place on May 4, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Regional Memorial Cremations, 1026 E Lindsay Street, Greensboro, NC.
