Sondra Kay Smitherman

Sondra Kay Smitherman, affectionately known as Kay, peacefully departed this world on August 2, 2026, after valiantly battling dementia. Born on April 15, 1942, in Port Arthur, Texas, Kay was the beloved daughter of Felix Byron Palmer and David Evelyn Palmer. Her life was a testament to faith, love, and unwavering dedication to family and community. Kay shared a beautiful journey of 65 years with her high school sweetheart, Tom Smitherman. Their marriage, which began on June 16, 1961, was a beacon of love and companionship, a source of inspiration to all who knew them. Together, they built a family that became the cornerstone of Kay's life. A devoted mother, Kay nurtured her four children, Scott Smitherman, Brenda Galatian, David Smitherman, and Lee Smitherman, alongside his wife Suzette. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Austin, Zachary and Samuel Galatian, and Olivia Smitherman, as well as six great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to her heart. Kay's education journey took her from Thomas Jefferson High School, class of 1960, to business school, where she honed skills that she later applied in her professional life. For several years, she worked as a receptionist for Vonnie Beard, and later, she served as a polling location chief for Harris County, dedicating her efforts to civic engagement. A woman of deep faith, Kay was an active member of the Alief church of Christ, teaching both children's and ladies' Bible classes. Her role as an Elder's wife was one of dedication and love. Kay also devoted over 15 years to the Florida College Dry Creek Camp in Louisiana, serving as a counselor and staff member, nurturing the spiritual growth of many young souls. Her love for others was evident in her hobbies and interests. Whether she was playing the piano late into the night, hosting gatherings filled with laughter and games, or welcoming guests with her culinary delights, Kay's warmth and humor were ever-present. She was a night owl with a keen sense of humor, always ready to share a smile or a piece of candy from her well-stocked stash. Kay is predeceased by her parents, Felix and Evelyn Palmer, and her brother Jerry Palmer, along with his wife Lorene. Today, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with them in peace. She is also survived by her brother Paul Palmer, along with his wife Pam. A service celebrating Kay's life will be held on September 19, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Alston Road church of Christ, located at 13302 Alston Road, Sugar Land, Texas 77478. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Research Association, in memory of Kay's courageous journey. The Smitherman family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many brothers and sisters of the Alston Road church, whose unwavering support through cards, calls, texts, emails, and acts of kindness have been a source of strength. Your love and generosity have been truly cherished. Kay's life was a testament to her unwavering faith, her love for her family, and her joyful spirit. Her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
