Shirley Wicks
October 25, 1935 — June 9, 2026
In loving memory of Shirley Wicks, born on October 25, 1935, in Little Rock, Arkansas, whose gentle spirit and fierce independence left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know her. Shirley passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, at the age of 90, after a long-fought battle with congestive heart failure. She was surrounded by her beloved daughters, Patricia and Rachel, who remained steadfast by her side in her final moments.
Daughter to Leonard and Evelyn Ashley, Shirley's early years were spent in the embrace of a loving family in Little Rock. Her formative years were marked by the enduring values of resilience and independence, traits that would define her life. Though she completed her formal schooling only through the eighth grade, Shirley's thirst for knowledge never waned. At age 51, she proudly earned her GED and furthered her education, obtaining certification as a teaching assistant from a local community college—a testament to her determination and love for learning.
In 1952, Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Ralph Alphonso, embarking on a journey together until his untimely passing in 1975. Together, they created a family filled with love, welcoming their daughters Patricia and Rachel, and later, cherishing their grandchildren Jennifer, Laura, and Ian. Shirley's life was touched by both profound joy and deep sorrow, having been predeceased by her parents, her sister Mary Lynn Dunlap, her brother Eddie Ashley, her infant son Ralph Anthony Alphonso, her grandson Kyle McLain, and her beloved husband Ralph.
After Ralph's passing, Shirley found love again and married Donald Wicks in 1977. Though they parted ways in 1994, Shirley's capacity for love and friendship endured. Her career as a teaching assistant at Brighton Elementary School allowed her to touch young lives with her sweet and gentle nature. She retired with fond memories of nurturing countless children, each a testament to her patience and kindness.
An active member of Gateway Baptist Church for 26 years, Shirley's dedication to her faith was evident in her selfless service, particularly in caring for infants in the church nursery. Her warmth and nurturing spirit were a comfort to many young families, and her presence will be dearly missed.
Shirley found solace and joy in simple pleasures—tending to her garden with love and care, and losing herself in the pages of a good book. Her yard was a reflection of her soul: vibrant, lively, and full of life. Her fierce spirit and stubborn streak were balanced by an enduring sweetness that endeared her to all who had the privilege of calling her a friend.
A private funeral will be held honoring Shirley’s wish for an intimate farewell, attended by those closest to her heart. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Gateway Baptist Church in Shirley's memory, continuing her legacy of care and community.
Shirley Wicks leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and grace. Her life, though touched by loss, was a brilliant tapestry of resilience and joy. She will be remembered always by her daughters Patricia (Tom) and Rachel (Ron), her cherished grandchildren Jennifer, Laura, and Ian, and by the countless lives she touched with her kindness. Rest in peace, dear Shirley, knowing that you were deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
