Shirley Smedley

December 8, 1944 — May 21, 2026

Shirley Smedley, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, peacefully departed this world on May 21, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on December 8, 1944, in the quaint town of Pinehurst, Shirley was the treasured daughter of Shirley Stewart and Joe Richardson. Her life was a testament to love, resilience, and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Shirley was a proud graduate of Pinecrest High School, where she built lasting friendships and developed a love for learning that she carried throughout her life. Her career journey led her to the world of office supplies, and she later devoted her talents to the U.S. Postal Service. In both roles, Shirley was known for her unwavering work ethic, warm smile, and the kindness she extended to colleagues and customers alike. As an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Shirley found a community that she held dear, engaging in numerous activities and supporting veterans with compassion and dedication. Her commitment to service was a cornerstone of her character, reflecting her deep respect for those who served their country. Shirley’s life was beautifully intertwined with the love she shared with her late husband, Donald Smedley. Together, they nurtured a family filled with love and laughter, cherishing moments with their children, Tarra and Sandra, both of whom sadly predeceased Shirley. Despite these profound losses, Shirley's strength and grace shone brightly through her devotion to her surviving children, Anthony (Rhonda) and Patricia, who were blessed with her unconditional love and guidance. Her legacy lives on in her cherished grandchildren, Kayla, Austin, and Katie, who were the light of her life. Shirley also delighted in the joys of being a great-grandmother, reveling in the presence of her great-grandchildren who brought her endless happiness. Her life was enriched by the love and support of several friends who remained by her side through all of life's seasons. Shirley's journey was one of profound love and resilience, marked by her unwavering faith, compassion for others, and an unyielding spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and cherished memories that will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew her. Her family invites those who wish to celebrate Shirley’s life to join them for a memorial service at a date to be announced, where they will gather to honor a remarkable woman whose life was a blessing to all. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Shirley's memory to the VFW, supporting a cause that was close to her heart. Shirley's spirit will forever be etched in the hearts of her family and friends, and her memory will be cherished as a beacon of love and strength. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her beloved husband and children, embraced in the warmth of everlasting love.
