Shirley Sapp

March 5, 1942 — October 19, 2026

Shirley Sapp, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2026, after a courageous battle with dementia. Born on March 5, 1942, in Gallatin, Tennessee, Shirley was a beacon of love and warmth to all who knew her. She now joins her cherished family in eternal peace, including her parents, William and Christine Griggs, her siblings Richard, Donnie, and Doug Griggs, her sisters Joyce Bowles and Doris Savage, her devoted husband Joe Sapp, and her in-laws Ann and Alton Sapp. Shirley graduated from Madison High School, a place where she first cultivated her love for learning and children—a passion that would guide her through a fulfilling career. Beginning with babysitting, she found her true calling in child development, dedicating her career to nourishing young minds as a lunch lady. For Shirley, feeding children was not just a job; it was an honor and a way to contribute to the growth and happiness of future generations. In February of 1963, Shirley married the love of her life, Joe Sapp, embarking on a beautiful journey that would bless them with four devoted daughters: Lisa (Gerado) Jara, Christi Renee (Randy) Alexander, Pamela Birdwell, and Debby Sapp. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren—Marty Birdwell, Megan (Jon) Frazer, Devon (Cayce) Wallace, Joseph Farmer, Christi Alexander, Ben Farmer, and Elizabeth Alexander—and the joy of six great-grandchildren who brought endless happiness to her life. Shirley's love for her family was boundless, and her home was always filled with laughter and joy. She was a modest and kind soul, whose deep love for her family was evident in every smile and every moment she spent with them. Her laughter would echo through the house, a testament to the joy she found in life and her unwavering belief in the importance of family. A woman of many interests, Shirley had a zest for life that was infectious. She loved to shop and decorate for holidays and birthdays, creating a home that was a haven of warmth and celebration. A spirited dancer, she enjoyed square dancing and often imagined being swept off her feet by Elvis Presley himself. Her heart was as big as her love for dance, and she was a stalwart member of the Knight of Columbus, attending St. Joseph Catholic Church before later finding a spiritual home at Matthews Memorial United Methodist Church. Shirley is survived by her children and grandchildren, along with her best friend, Bernadette Lopez, who shared countless memories and joys with her. Her family and friends invite those who wish to honor her memory to make a donation to a charity of their choice, continuing Shirley's legacy of kindness and generosity. As we remember Shirley, we hold dear the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the joyful spirit she imparted to everyone around her. She remains in our hearts as a guiding light, reminding us to cherish every moment and love deeply.

In lieu of flowers, the family of Shirley Sapp welcomes donations to a charity, nonprofit, church, or organization of your choosing.
