It is with heavy hearts and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well lived, that we announced the peaceful passing of Shirley Norine Corneau on February 19, 2026 at the age of 94. Surrounded by her loving family, Shirley left this world how she lived it- gracefully and with profound love. Born on August 25, 1931 on Grindstone Island, New York, Shirley was the cherished daughter of Garland and Verna Garnsey and stepdaughter to Florence. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings Eugene Garnsey, Glen Garnsey, and Elizabeth Clark, her cousin Josie Calhoun, her husband, Donald Corneau, and her precious daughter, Coni Acquavella. Shirley shared a 52-year journey with her husband, Donald, whom she married on December 31, 1950, in Canton, New York. Together, they built a life filled with love and three beautiful daughters. A woman of remarkable talent and passion, Shirley worked in the harness racing industry alongside her father and brother- where fate introduced her to Donald. Her career path later led her to the medical field, where she served as a dedicated nursing and physical therapy aide. Shirley’s compassionate nature and commitment to helping others left an indelible mark on all those who knew her. In her personal life Shirley was a beacon of warmth and creativity. She found immense joy in crafting- particularly in sewing, leaving behind treasured creations that will continue to wrap her family in love. She kept a very active lifestyle, enjoying water aerobics, biking and walks with her loyal dog, Tucker. A voracious reader, Shirley instilled a love of books in her daughters and her grandchildren. Shirley’s quick wit and feisty spirit brightened every room she entered. Her infectious smile, and joyful presence were a gift to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind her children, Donna Cadet and Melissa Layne, son-in-law‘s Michael Cadet and Michael Layne, grandchildren Brixton Layne and Maci Layne and her beloved dog, Tucker. Her legacy of love, kindness, and strength will live on in their hearts forever. A Celebration of Life luncheon to honor Shirley will be held on February 28, 2026 at 11 AM at The Clubhouse at McCall Village located at 1701 E. Dinuba Ave., Selma, CA 93662. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Shirley’s many dear friends at McCall Village for their unwavering love and support, especially Sue Spire, who became more like a sister to Shirley. Special thanks are also extended to the medical and rehabilitation teams that provided Shirley with care throughout the years. In celebrating Shirley’s life, we remember her as a loving mother, Nana, and friend whose spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed and forever cherished.
