Shirley Gaskins-Lewis

July 12, 1952 — July 17, 2026

It is with both heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Gaskins-Lewis, who left this world on July 17, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on July 12, 1952, in Exmore, Virginia, Shirley was a beacon of love and grace to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Shirley was the beloved daughter of the late Louise Myrtle Gaskins and Edward Augusta Gaskins, and she shared an unbreakable bond with her family that was rooted in love and faith. She is survived by her devoted husband of 26 years, Thomas Lewis, who stood by her side through life’s joys and challenges. Together, they built a life filled with love and devotion that inspired all who knew them. A proud graduate of Northampton High School, Class of 1969, Shirley was a woman whose faith was the cornerstone of her life. Her devotion to the Lord and her church was evident in everything she did, and her faith was a guiding light not only for her own life but also for those around her. She found immense joy in worship and in the fellowship of her church community. Shirley’s family was her greatest treasure. She leaves behind her beloved daughters, Shirlna Rhoades, along with her husband Gurnell, and Athena Walls. Her cherished grandchildren, Ashley Smith, Danielle Rhoades, Johnathon Rhoades, Nathan Walls, and Alena Walls, and four great-grandchildren. She will forever hold her memory in their hearts. Her siblings, Jeanetta Bullock, Edward Gaskins and his wife Michelle, Diana Carter, Jackie Booker, Pat Salsbury and her husband John, Katina Strand, and Charlotte Gaskins-Gonzales, will carry forward her legacy of love and unity. Shirley’s kindness, gentle spirit, and warm smile made a lasting impact on everyone she met. Her love and compassion knew no bounds, extending beyond her family to touch the lives of countless friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, and those fortunate enough to call her a friend. Her strength and grace were a testament to her character, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing her. A celebration of Shirley’s life will take place on August 1, 2026, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and the beautiful life she led. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice, in recognition of Shirley’s generous spirit and her commitment to helping others. While we grieve the loss of Shirley's presence in our lives, we take comfort in knowing that she is now with the Lord, as she so deeply believed. Her legacy of love, strength, and unwavering devotion will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she leaves behind, a testament to a life lived with purpose and grace. As we reflect on Shirley’s journey, we are reminded of 2 Corinthians 5:8, "To be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord." This passage serves as a comforting reminder that Shirley's spirit has found eternal peace and joy in the presence of her Savior. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
