Shirley Fleming Cooper
September 2, 1937 — May 29, 2026
In the early hours of May 29, 2026, the world gently bid farewell to a truly remarkable soul, Shirley Fleming Cooper, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Born on September 2, 1937, in Anderson, South Carolina, Shirley was the cherished daughter of Franklin Pierce and Nellie Mae Fleming. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, her brothers Jake and Max Fleming, and her dear son Scott Cooper.
Shirley's journey through life was filled with love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to those around her. She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 70 years, B.V. Cooper, who stood by her side through every joy and challenge. Their love story began on a blind date in 1954, an encounter that blossomed into a lifelong partnership sealed in marriage in August 1956. Together, they built a beautiful family, including their daughters Leslie Cooper and Maria Morrone and husband Joe, granddaughters Stephanie Cooper, Savannah McCoy and husband Michael, Anika Morrone, and great-grandchildren Blake McCoy, and Luke McCoy.
A proud alumna of Hannah High School in Anderson, SC, Shirley graduated in 1955. Despite receiving a full 4-year academic scholarship, she chose to marry B.V., who was to report for Army duty shortly after their wedding. With resilience and determination, she continued her education, earning a BA in English with highest honors from the University of Virginia's College at Wise and later, her Master's degree in Counseling with highest honors from Georgia State University.
Professionally, Shirley dedicated 25 years to the field of education, teaching English, drama, and literature in Virginia and Georgia public schools. Her warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on her students, who revered her for her compassion and understanding. As a counselor, she was a beacon of hope for many children, using a large brown Teddy Bear in her office as a tool for comfort and healing. Her gentle guidance helped students navigate personal challenges, leading many to successful careers in various demanding fields.
Outside her professional life, Shirley's heart was firmly anchored in her family, which she often said was her greatest joy. Her love and commitment to her family were unwavering, and she cherished every moment spent in their company. An avid reader and a skilled sailor, Shirley could often be found with a book in hand or navigating the waters on her ocean-going sailboat, confidently captaining her vessel, a testament to her adventurous spirit and determination.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Shirley will remember her as a kind, caring, and compassionate individual. Her sweet nature, generosity, intelligence, fairness, and strength were qualities that endeared her to all who crossed her path. As a family member lovingly remarked, "Shirley doesn't have a mean bone in her body."
In honoring Shirley's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate her life. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible staff of Charles House Center for Community Eldercare, Charles House – Winmore, and Amedisys Hospice Care for their compassion, dedication, and professionalism during Shirley's final journey.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Charles House Association, in tribute to the extraordinary care and support they provided. Contributions can be made at: Charles House Donation.
Shirley Fleming Cooper's legacy of love, kindness, and strength will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she has departed from this world, her spirit will continue to sail on in the lives of her family and friends, guiding them with the gentle winds of her enduring love.
