It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Shirley Ann Phelan, who departed this life on July 9, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on June 13, 1952, in Montgomery, Alabama, Shirley was a beacon of love, strength, and resilience.
Shirley was the cherished daughter of Magnolia Tatum and Fred Phelan. Preceded in death by her mother and her brother, William Tatum, Shirley's legacy endures through her surviving family. She is lovingly remembered by her devoted daughter, Shirelle Phelan; her siblings, Carrie Long, Sam Tatum, Fred Phelan, Charles Phelan, and James Tatum; her cherished grandchildren, Sakyra Phelan, Samirah Phelan, and Kareem Phelan; and her adored great-grandchildren, Emir Graham, Sincere Phelan, Sa’Nai Phelan, and Si’Yani Phelan.
A proud graduate of Jefferson Davis High School, Shirley furthered her education at John Patterson Technical College, where she earned a diploma in administration. Her career spanned over three decades as an Account Coordinator for Pitney Bowes, where she was known for her dedicated service, handling valued clients, and solving complex issues with grace and precision.
Shirley’s life was rich with simple pleasures and deep passions. She found joy in watching golf, tennis, and basketball, relishing the skill and strategy of each game. An avid reader of the Bible, Shirley’s faith was her guiding light, and she often shared verses that brought comfort and inspiration to those around her.
Her personal qualities were as varied as they were admirable. A loving parent and grandmother, Shirley had an innate ability to make everyone feel valued and cherished. Her generosity was boundless, always willing to lend a helping hand. Known for her exceptional culinary skills, Shirley’s kitchen was often the heart of family gatherings, where her beautiful smile and warm presence made every occasion special. Her hard-working nature and toughness were matched only by her kindness and empathy.
The family will hold a service to honor Shirley’s life on July 25, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Eastwood Memorial Gardens, located at 7500 Wares Ferry Road, Montgomery, AL 36117. Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating the life of a remarkable woman who touched so many hearts.
