It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Ann Gilliam on April 22, 2026, at her cherished home, surrounded by the love of her family. After a short illness, Shirley left this world with the same grace and dignity that she carried throughout her 86 years of life. Born on May 18, 1939, in the quaint town of Rockbridge Baths, Virginia, Shirley was the beloved daughter of Arthur L Newcomer Sr and Betty B. Riley Newcomer. She grew up alongside her brother, Auther (Jimmy) L Newcomer Jr, both of whom preceded her in death. On October 3, 1967, Shirley married the love of her life, Leonard Gilliam. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and partnership, spanning 58 beautiful years. Together, they built a life centered around family, which was Shirley's greatest joy and her life's work. Shirley was a dedicated and loving mother to her children: Brenda L. Torres, Henry (Tony) M. Gilliam, and Christopher L. Gilliam. She welcomed her daughters-in-law, Pamela and Belinda Gilliam, into her family with open arms and a heart full of love. Shirley is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 4 nieces and 1 nephew. Shirley's life was a celebration of family and devotion. Though her professional life was centered around caring for her loved ones, the impact of her loving spirit extended far beyond her immediate family. In this time of sorrow, we remember Shirley Ann Gilliam not only for the loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother she was but also for the kindness and compassion she shared with everyone she met.
