In Loving Memory

Shiela “Pete” Barnes
November 16, 1946 — June 27, 2026
In the warmth of a peaceful June night, Shiela "Pete" Barnes gracefully departed this world in her sleep on June 27, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on November 16, 1946, in the tranquil town of Bridgewater, Maine, Shiela's life was a tapestry woven with love, devotion, and unyielding faith.
The cherished daughter of the late Mearl and Frances (McNinch) DeLong, Shiela was a beacon of kindness and strength. Her formative years were spent in the embrace of a loving family, alongside her sisters Carole Cote and Cynthia Tracy, who predeceased her, leaving an indelible mark on her heart.
Shiela's life was enriched by a remarkable love story with her husband, Gayle Barnes, whom she married on July 21, 1967. Together, they crafted a life filled with love and laughter until Gayle's passing on May 31, 2011. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Cynthia, who preceded her mother in passing, and Darlene (Barnes) Tolbert, who carries forth her mother's legacy with grace.
Shiela's life was a testament to her boundless love and nurturing spirit. She dedicated herself to her family, both immediate and extended, and embraced the role of a "professional loving Grandmother and Great Grandmother." Her nurturing nature extended beyond her immediate family, as she took great joy in caring for her nieces and nephews, including Lisa (Richard) Bailey, Vaughn (Jan) Dyer, and Daniel Dyer.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Amanda Dyer, Jeremy (Ashley) Tolbert, Andrew (Chelsie) Dyer, Dawn (Alex) Zibitsker, Jacob Tolbert, Caleb Tolbert, Elizabeth Tolbert, and Kihly Caldwell, and her great-grandchildren, Riley Dyer, Patience Tolbert, Remy "Daisy" Tolbert, Kyler Tolbert, Nathan Dyer, and Nova Leigh Tolbert. Each one carries a piece of Shiela's spirit, a testament to her enduring love and guidance.
Shiela's commitment to her faith was unwavering. A proud graduate of Zion Bible Institute in 1965, she cherished her role as a member of the Old Paris Road Church of God, where she spread the word of God with joy and conviction. Her faith was not merely a part of her life; it was the very foundation upon which she built her world.
An avid reader, Shiela found solace in books, while her hands were rarely idle, often crocheting and sewing. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her joy of mowing the field behind her house, a simple pleasure that brought her peace.
Shiela possessed the rare gift of making everyone feel welcome and heard. Her warmth and compassion were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind not only her surviving family but also a community that is better for having known her.
As we say goodbye to Shiela "Pete" Barnes, we celebrate a life lived with love, faith, and unwavering generosity. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. May she find eternal peace, reunited with her beloved Gayle and Cynthia, in the gentle embrace of the Lord she so dearly loved.
