October 17, 1940 — September 3, 2026

Sherry Deane Brandel, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by love at Community Hospice on September 3, 2026. Born on October 17, 1940, in Hamilton, Ohio, Sherry lived a life filled with compassion, adventure, and an unwavering dedication to her family. The daughter of Marzina Ashbrook and Luther Wells, Sherry was raised in a nurturing environment that instilled in her a deep sense of kindness and responsibility. She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1958, the same year she married her high school sweetheart, Donald Joseph Brandel, known lovingly as Joe. Together, they built a life rooted in love and shared values, raising three wonderful children: Liz Brandel, Joe Brandel (Debbie), and Nancy Ridley (David). Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, lasting 63 years until Joe's passing in 2021. Sherry's career took her to Oak Ridge National Labs, where she worked as a Chemical Operator until her retirement in 1992. Following her retirement, she and Joe moved to the serene shores of Sunset Beach, North Carolina. There, Sherry found her calling as the "Turtle Lady," dedicating her time to spotting and protecting sea turtle nests—a role that brought her immense joy and fulfillment. A devoted grandmother, Sherry cherished every moment spent with her seven grandchildren: Chris Weitlauf (Donna), Ashlee Davis (Brian), Brittney Moulds (Tyler), Kevin Brandel (Emily), Tim Brandel, Luke Ridley (Danielle), and Jake Ridley. Her love extended to her five great-grandchildren: Gracie and Daniel Moulds, Luna and Ezra Ridley, and Rory Brandel, who brought her endless delight and pride. Sherry was known for her generous spirit and her willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Her home was a place of warmth and hospitality; she famously enjoyed doing laundry, ensuring her guests always felt at home. Sherry had a passion for travel, with fond memories of her adventures, especially her cherished trip to China. Her siblings Kenny Wells (Sandy), Kathy Westhausen, Carolyn Hushour (Roger), Jon Robinson (Mary), and Julie McMullen survive her, carrying forward her legacy of kindness and love. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Silver Treasures Assisted Living and the Bailey Family Center/Community Hospice of NE Florida for their compassionate care during Sherry's final days. A service to celebrate Sherry's life will be held on September 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Craig Funeral Home, 1475 Old Dixie Hwy, Saint Augustine, FL 32084. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sherry's memory may be made to Community Hospice and Palliative Care. Sherry's departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, but her spirit will forever be a guiding light to her family and friends. Her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to family will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
