Sherman Ernest Tolbert
January 1, 1982 — February 16, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sherman Ernest Tolbert, who departed this life peacefully on February 16, 2026, at NYU Langone Hospital. Born on January 1, 1982, in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Sherman lived a life marked by kindness, intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
Sherman was the beloved son of Arlene P. Tolbert and Sherman Mcleod. He was cherished deeply by his surviving family: his devoted aunt, Eden McLeod; his brothers, Eddie Sherman McLeod and Jerome McLeod; and his sisters, Deshawn McLeod and Ski Mary McLeod. Family was the cornerstone of Sherman's life, and he held each member dearly, always finding ways to bring warmth and laughter to their lives.
Sherman’s educational journey took him from Martin Luther King High School to community college in 1998/1999, and then to a specialized welding school in 2002/2003. Ever eager to expand his horizons and deepen his skills, he most recently attended the Philadelphia Technician Training Institute in 2025, where he pursued advanced studies in Manufacturing as an Engineering Technician. Sherman's thirst for knowledge was unquenchable, and his dedication to learning was an inspiration to all who knew him.
In 1999, Sherman answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army. His time in the military, though brief, was marked by an honorable discharge, reflecting his steadfast dedication and integrity. Sherman's service was a testament to his character, his willingness to stand up for what he believed in, and his commitment to a cause greater than himself.
Sherman was a man of many talents and passions. An avid chess player, he reveled in the strategic intricacies of the game, bringing the same patience and focus to the chessboard as he did to life. As an artist and writer, Sherman expressed his unique perspective through creativity, capturing the beauty and complexity of the world around him. His quick wit and humor were matched by a reflective mind and a quiet strength that left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A service to honor Sherman’s life will be held on May 1, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Dinnwiddie Memorial Park, located at 7324 Church Rd, Petersburg, VA 23803. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. Your kindness and compassion have provided great comfort.
In celebrating Sherman’s life, we are reminded of the importance of connection, compassion, and the power of being present for one another. His life teaches us that everyone deserves understanding, grace, and a place to belong. In his memory, we encourage you to stay connected, find a place where you feel safe, seen, and supported, and continue to share the love that Sherman so freely gave.
