In Loving Memory

Shelly Sue Merriman
June 25, 1964 — June 3, 2026
Shelly Sue Merriman, a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, at the age of 61, after bravely facing complications with cancer. Born on June 25, 1964, in Decatur, Illinois, Shelly was a beacon of love, vivacity, and strength to all who knew her.
Shelly was the cherished daughter of Candice Steele and the late Robert "Bob" Steele. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Carl Merriman, with whom she shared a beautiful marriage of 16 years until his passing in 2012. Together, Shelly and Carl built a loving home in Macon County, Illinois, where they adopted and raised their three wonderful sons: Carl "Markus" (Haleigh), Gene "Jonathan" (Brittany), and Charles "Joseph."
A graduate of the original Lakeview High School in Decatur, class of 1982, Shelly went on to dedicate 15 years of her professional life as a Vet Tech at Brush College Animal Hospital. Her love for animals was evident in her work and the compassion she showed to every creature she encountered.
Shelly was a remarkable woman, known for her loving personality, sassy comebacks, and unapologetic honesty. Her willingness to help anyone in need was a testament to her generous spirit. She was an active member of her women's motorcycle club, where she forged lifelong friendships and shared countless adventures.
In her leisure time, Shelly found joy in horseback riding and cruising on her motorcycle. Sundays were sacred for Shelly, as she relished spending time at POP's Place, enjoying the live bands and the camaraderie of her community. Her love for animals, friends, and family was unparalleled, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Shelly is survived by her loving mother, Candice Steele, her treasured sons, Markus, Jonathan, and Joseph, and her adored grandchildren, Arlo Merriman and Za’Kai Carroll. She also leaves behind her devoted sisters, Melissa (Eric) Yutzy and Michelle (Bob) Rush, and her dear nieces and nephews, Tyler Yutzy and Crystal Kelly.
Shelly's life was a testament to love, resilience, and the power of community. Her memory will forever be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she has left this world, her spirit and the warmth she brought to our lives will continue to live on in our hearts.
A celebration of Shelly's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor her remarkable journey. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a local animal shelter in Shelly's memory, continuing her legacy of compassion and care for all living beings.
May Shelly Merriman rest in eternal peace, forever riding the wind and watching over those she loved so deeply.
