With full hearts and cherished memories, we celebrate the remarkable life of Shellie James Charley, who was called home to rest on October 8, 2026. Born on November 18, 1949, in Coy, Alabama, Shellie was the cherished son of Tony and Evelyn McCaskey Charley. His life's journey was marked by love, dedication, and an unyielding spirit that left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Shellie was a proud graduate of Camden Academy and continued his education at Boston State College, a testament to his commitment to learning and personal growth. His professional life was spent in devoted service at General Motors, where he retired after more than thirty years, remembered for his strong work ethic and steady leadership. Shellie's life was enriched by the love of his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Richardson Charley, whom he married on February 16, 2014. Their reconnection brought twelve beautiful years of companionship, surrounded by their loving and blended family. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his cherished children, James Terry Samuel (Carmen) and Atiya Charley, both of Boston, MA; and his beloved bonus children, Ronda Boyd of Grifton, NC; Juan Richardson (Cozette) of Sterling Heights, MI; TiJuanna Gaddy of Chattanooga, TN; Alicia Barney (Lawrence) of Redford, MI; and Quiona Lane (John) of Romulus, MI. Preceding him in eternal rest are his parents, Tony and Evelyn Charley; his brothers, Samuel Charley and Tony Charley Jr.; and his dear twin sister, Sherrie Mae Mack. His memory will forever be cherished by his brother, Sylvester Charley of Boston, MA, and his dear in-laws, Dr. Hattie Pearl Hopkins (Dr. Frederick) of Winterville, NC; Deacon Armie Lee Richardson (Rebecca) of Pensacola, FL; Evangelist Gwendolyn Bonnie Baker-Eden (Minister James) of Canton, MI; and Elder Nathaniel Richardson (Wanda) of Greenville, NC. A host of nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and acquaintances. A man of many talents, Shellie was celebrated as a championship candlepin bowler and gifted the world with his beautiful tenor voice, performing with gospel choirs and vocal groups. He delighted in sharing the homesteading skills of his youth, teaching his children the values of farming, cooking, and practical wisdom. Shellie was known for his witty jokes, his storytelling, and the way he captured the room whenever he spoke. He made everyone feel welcomed and valued. His kindness and generosity touched countless lives. If he wasn’t talking, he was smiling and enjoying the energy of family gatherings. As a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ooltewah, Shellie found deep spiritual fulfillment and cherished the fellowship of his congregation. His generosity and kindness enriched countless lives, and his laughter and joy will be remembered by his 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family members and friends.
